    This week more than 200 dolphins were found dead along a 106-kilometer stretch at the beaches of Lambayeque.

    Authorities have not yet been able to determine the cause of the deaths.

    According to El Comercio, Edward Barriga, head of Peru's Ocean Institute (Imarpe) in Lambayeque, ordered samples be sent to Lima, for further analysis.

    "Soon we will announce the root causes," Barriga said.

    Barriga said he had also found considerable quantities of dead anchovies on the beaches between the district of San jose and Palo Parado, in Morrope.

    Jorge Torres Cabrejos, head of the Lambayeque's Association of Maritime Growers, said the dolphins might have eaten the dead anchovies, who had died from decomposing plankton, caused by heavy pollution.

    According to El Comercio, Torres denied that local fisherman were to blame for the dolphins' deaths.

    Last month Imarpe investigated the death of several dolphins and sea lions in the beaches of Piura.

    Local media said the deaths could have been the result of oil spills in the area.

    Comment: This is a very bad sign. We can suspect methane or other poison outgassing, or perhaps may be underwater volcanic activity which means more precipitation either of the rain/flood or snow/freeze variety.

    More strandings are expected after 129 dolphins beached themselves on Cape Cod in the last three weeks, with 92 dying in "the single largest stranding" of dolphins in the Northeast since at least 1999, the International Fund for Animal Welfare reported Monday.

    On Sunday, four dolphins were stranded along Cape Cod's hook-shaped peninsula and were quickly helped back to sea. The Massachusetts peninsula sees many dolphin strandings each year, but the 129 since Jan. 12 is typically about what rescuers see over an entire year, based on records that go back to 1999, IFAW marine mammal rescue manager Katie Moore told msnbc.com.



    "This event started on the 12th and is still continuing," she added at a press conference on Monday, noting that rescuers from IFAW and other stranding networks were deployed in "anticipation of more dolphins coming in."

    The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which manages the rescue response, echoed the concern.

    For common dolphins, the species that has been stranding in Cape Cod, "this is the largest, most protracted stranding event in recent decades," Teri Rowles, who coordinates NOAA's Marine Mammal Health and Stranding Response Program, told msnbc.com.

    Most of the dolphins have appeared to be in good health, adding to the mystery of why so many have come ashore. Common dolphins are known to strand in groups due to their tight social structure, but given the large numbers this year, other factors such as weather and tides are being investigated.

    "I don't know," Moore said when asked about causes. "It pains me to say those three words."

    Asked if climate change might be a factor, Moore said she couldn't rule that out or in. As for the possibility of sonar or other human-made sounds disrupting the dolphins, she said no known sources existed inside Cape Cod.

    Initial results of studies on nine of the dead dolphins "do not indicate any pattern," she noted.

    This stranding "is not only out of the ordinary," she said, "but it takes a huge toll on our resources. It's hard labor."

    Rowles noted that "Cape Cod is the hot spot in North America" for mass strandings, and that "there seems to be a lot of variability each year."

    The large numbers have "made the response effort very difficult" and "left us confused about what's going on," IFAW biologist C.T. Harry earlier told NBC affiliate WHDH TV.

    IFAW has tagged several dolphins that survived with satellite tracking devices to see if they are leaving the area. So far at least, they have stayed in deeper waters.

    IFAW on Friday briefed some U.S. lawmakers about the mass strandings and urged Congress not to cut the federal program that helps fund stranding research and response networks nationwide.

    "If scientists do not have the funds to determine the cause of a mass mortality event, there could be a threat to public health without anyone knowing," IFAW President Fred O'Regan wrote on his blog last week.

    Up to 800 birds have been found dead at wetlands in Christchurch's eastern suburbs and the oxidation ponds.

    The Christchurch City Council said yesterday that during the past few weeks dead birds have been found on the banks of the oxidation ponds in Bromley.

    Dead birds have also been found in the Bexley area and the Travis Wetland.

    Council ornithologist Andrew Crossland said between 600 and 800 dead birds had been found.

    "The earthquakes in Christchurch have caused a lot of changes to water quality but also to effluent levels at the oxidation ponds," he said.

    "It's got nothing to do with anything physical such as liquefaction but more to do with the fluctuating water levels and changes like that."

    Investigations were underway but the initial diagnosis was avian botulism, a paralysing disease caused by a toxin which thrives in shallow, warm water.

    Avian botulism can not be transferred to people.

    However, the council was urging people and animals to avoid infected or dead birds until specialist testing was complete.

    At least 11 more dolphins have stranded themselves on the shores of Cape Cod this morning as the mass strandings enter the second month. The International Fund for Animal Welfare said at least one of the 11 had died.



    The animal welfare group said the dolphins were found in an area commonly known as "the gut," a muddy area near the Herring River in Wellfleet.

    "The team is out there now with 10 live dolphins," the group's spokesman Michael Booth said. "It could take quite awhile; it's a treacherous location with lots of mud. The team is trying to pull them out of the mud and bring them to our rescue trailers."

    On Monday morning, crews rescued and treated three dolphins near the Chequesset Yacht and Country Club in Wellfleet. All three dolphins were given medical evaluations and released at Scusset Beach in Bourne.

    A total of 177 dolphins have been stranded. Aside from the 10 who are still the subject of rescue efforts today, 43 have been rescued and 124 have died. The group said the cause of the strandings is still unknown.

    "So far no patterns have emerged, but the many lab analyses will take months to complete," Katie Moore, the group's manager of marine mammal rescue and research, said in a blog post. "We may yet find one."

    Since the mass stranding event began Jan. 12, the group, which relies on a small army of volunteers, said they have received an uptick in interest. The group, however, cannot increase its ranks until all potential volunteers are properly trained.

    "As soon as we get over this busy season, we'll have some training for folks," Booth said. "For now, we have to depend on our existing volunteers."

    Hundreds of birds just dropped from the sky and landed onto I-95 Wednesday, bringing afternoon rush hour traffic to a crawl.



    They were common Starlings, and while there were a few in the grass and on the shoulders of the highway, the vast majority landed right on the northbound travel lanes in Laurel.

    "We were just kind of curious about running them over and getting them stuck in your tires and all that nastiness," says Tammy Johnson.

    "I travel this all the time and have never seen anything like that before," says Ray Wheltle.

    Traffic backed up as drivers slowed down out of concern for the birds and their cars.

    A highway crew swept and shoveled what they could while the drivers crept by scratching their heads. State biologists say they've also seen Starlings, which tend to fly in large tight flocks, crash into the sides of tractor trailers.

    Some suspect something sinister.

    "Environmental hazards, toxins in the air and in the environment maybe," a person said.

    Maryland Department of Natural Resources biologist Peter Bedel believes the Starlings flew into a truck. He does not suspect any disease and is sending samples to a lab just in case.

    Laurel resident Dan Kennedy said something weird happened nearby a week or two ago.

    "A bunch of birds flying into a parking lot and diving in thinking its water," Kennedy said. "A bunch of birds died."

    Some are linking the deaths to similar incidents elsewhere.

    "Down in Alabama or Mississippi something like that where a whole bunch of birds just died and fell out of the sky," said Richmond resident Doug Morris.

    One possible culprit is nearby power lines. The birds could have encountered something deadly simultaneously. But with no definitive cause named for killing the birds, some continue to worry about a hidden danger to themselves.

    "We're next, they're the canaries," a person said.

    A new virus is causing lambs to be born with deformities so severe that they die within seconds.

    It is thought midges brought the Schmallenberg virus to Britain from continental Europe last autumn.

    The foetuses of newly-pregnant ewes bitten by the insects often fail to develop properly.

    At Mayfield Farm near Mildenhall in Suffolk, 75 of the 1,700 lambs born so far this year were affected.

    "In a ewe that was carrying twins, she would have a job lambing it. You would have to pull it out," said farmer Clive Sleightholme.

    "The legs were fused together and tucked underneath, its head was angular, not formed properly.

    "They had undershot jaws and they weren't fleshed out properly but nearly every one was alive when it was pulled out but only lived seconds up to a minute."

    The Schmallenberg virus, which is not thought to cause risk to humans, was first identified in Germany in November. There have also been cases in Belgium, France and the Netherlands.

    Vet Toby Kemble has already seen deformed lambs at eight out of 10 sheep farms he has been to in north Norfolk this year.

    "It's concerning for the farmer, from their point of view they are losing lambs and losing productivity but it's very upsetting seeing the lambs," he said.

    So far the majority of confirmed cases have been in Suffolk and Norfolk. But farms in Kent, East Sussex, Essex and Hertfordshire have also been affected.

    And in West Sussex the virus has been found not just in sheep but also cattle. Most lambs and calves are born in the spring so for many farmers it is a waiting game.

    "It's a new virus so we just don't know what's going to happen," said Mr Kemble.

    "It may be we have seen the peak already but what we may be seeing is the tip of the iceberg and it's just going to get worse and worse."

    Farmers do not even have to tell the authorities although they are advised to provide samples. At one farm, a quarter of all lambs were affected.

    With healthy animals selling for £100 each it means a serious financial impact.

The Dubai-based Emirat Alyoum Arabic language daily carried a two-minute film on Monday showing dead fish were plucked by an association boat in an area extending around half a mile in Boya Zahra west of Dubai. “We have received information from the coast guard they have found thousands of dead fish in that area…these fish are considered among the best marine animals and we believe they have been subjected to banned fishing ways by some boats,” the association’s chairman Mohammed Al Marri said. “We sent a boat to verify the report and found many types of Tuna fish, which we call Al Sadda, have perished...the Ministry of Environment and the Dubai Municipality have launched an investigation into this problem.” Marri said the investigation would reveal how this “massacre” happened, adding that it could have been a result of new fishing techniques carried by special boats, of which six are believed to be in Dubai and two in Sharjah. “It is expected that the persons who are responsible for this lack fishing experience…they used this technique in a wrong way, resulting in catching a large quantity of fish that exceeds their boat capacity…this has led to the death of all excess fish catch…most of them were found floating on the surface.” He said the present unsettled weather in the UAE and strong sea currents prevented an aggravation in this problem as a large quantity of the fish were washed away Dubai’s coast to outside the Gulf. “Otherwise, it could have caused an environmental problem to Dubai’s coasts and great annoyance to the people.”
