บริหารโดย California Institute of Technology (Caltech) ใกล้ Pasadena, California.

Scientists have played down suggestions that there is any link between the event in the Urals and 2012 DA14, an asteroid expected to race past the Earth on Friday at a distance of just 27,700km (17,200 miles) - the closest ever predicted for an object of that size.

Prof Alan Fitzsimmons, of the Astrophysics Research Centre at Queen's University Belfast, said there was "almost definitely" no connection.

"One reason is that 2012 DA14 is approaching Earth from the south, and this object hit in the northern hemisphere," he told BBC News.

"This is literally a cosmic coincidence, although a spectacular one."

Asteroid 2012 DA14 passed harmlessly by Earth on February 15 | Space | EarthSky

    A near-Earth asteroid – called 2012 DA14 by astronomers – swept safely past Earth today (February 15, 2013).
At its closest to us, it was within the orbit of the moon (which averages about a quarter million miles away), and closer than some high-orbiting communications satellites – about 17,200 miles (27,680 kilometers) away. The asteroid sped harmlessly past, with its closest approach today at 1925 UTC (1:25 p.m. CST). Many online viewing sessions are still scheduled for later today, as darkness falls in various parts of the world. Check here for links to online viewing of asteroid 2012 DA14.

This movie from the Samford Valley Observatory in Brisbane, Australia, shows the progress of asteroid 2012 DA14 across the night sky as it neared its closest approach today. Astronomers captured this video approximately six-and-a-half hours prior to the asteroid’s closest approach. The movie has been sped up 50 times.

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxKVzJcUW-Q&feature=player_embedded]Approach of Asteroid 2012 DA14 from Samford Valley Observatory - YouTube[/ame]

Meanwhile, only hours before the asteroid’s closest approach to Earth, a meteorite struck in Russia, injuring nearly 1,000 people, according to media reports. Although asteroids are known to sometimes have their own moons, or travel in swarms, NASA now says the meteorite is not associated with asteroid 2012 DA14.

    http://en.es-static.us/upl/2012/03/2012_DA14.jpeg

What do we know about asteroid 2012 DA14?

Asteroid 2012 DA14 is a little guy, compared to some asteroids. It is thought to be about 45 meters across (nearly 150 feet across), or about the length of half an American football field. Its estimated mass is about 130,000 metric tons.

If a space object 150 feet wide were to strike our planet, it wouldn’t be Earth-destroying. But it has been estimated that it would produce the equivalent of 2.4 megatons of TNT. How does that compare with other known impact events on Earth? In 1908, in a remote part of Russia, an explosion killed reindeer and flattened trees. But no crater was ever found. Scientists now believe a small comet struck Earth. That event has been estimated at 3 to 20 megatons. So 2012 DA14 is in the same approximate realm as the Tunguska comet (which, actually, might have been an asteroid instead). It would not destroy Earth, but it could flatten a city.

Of course, about 70% of our world is covered by oceans. That means the most likely landing spot of any incoming asteroid is in the water – not on a city or other populated area.

Astronomers at the Observatorio Astronómico de La Sagra in Spain discovered 2012 DA14 in early 2012. We know 2012 DA14′s orbit is similar to that of Earth. That is one reason the asteroid eluded astronomers until recently. Astronomers will be tracking 2012 DA14 in the future.

    Will 2012 DA14 strike Earth in 2020?

No. In March 2012, when a collision between 2012 DA14 and Earth in 2020 was still remotely possible, I asked astronomer Donald Yeomans to clarify the risk. Yeomans is, among other things, manager of NASA’s Near-Earth Object Program Office at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. In March 2012, he told EarthSky that a 2020 collision between Earth and asteroid 2012 DA14 was …

… approximately one chance in 83,000, with additional remote possibilities beyond 2020. However, by far the most likely scenario is that additional observations, especially in 2013, will allow a dramatic reduction in the orbit uncertainties and the complete elimination of the 2020 impact possibility.

It turned out they didn’t have to wait until 2013. By May, 2012, astronomers had ruled out even the remote possibility of a 2020 collision.

Astronomers say that 95% of asteroids large enough to do damage on Earth are now known. Still, 2012 DA14 and asteroids like it are sobering.

Bottom line: The near Earth asteroid 2012 DA14 had a very close pass near Earth on February 15, 2013. It swept approximately 21,000 miles from us – much closer than the moon’s orbit and closer than geosynchronous satellites. Meanwhile, a meteorite struck in Russia early in the day on Friday on February 15. Although asteroids do sometimes have moons, or travel in swarms, NASA says the meteorite is not associated with asteroid 2012 DA14.

The big rock came from the south, the smaller one from the east.

As asteroid whizzes by, surprise meteor makes an impact over Russia - The Washington Post

As asteroid whizzes by, surprise meteor makes an impact over Russia

By Brian Vastag, Will Englund and Joel Achenbach, Published: February 15

It was a day when the Earth was caught in a cosmic crossfire. The big rock came from the south, the smaller one from the east. They were unrelated objects, with different orbits, one the size of an apartment building, the other slimmer but with better aim.
The larger asteroid missed by 17,000 miles, as expected, but the Russian meteor stole the show Friday, fireballing across the Ural Mountains in spectacular fashion and exploding into fragments, creating a powerful shock wave that blew out windows, collapsed roofs and injured 1,200 people, mostly from broken glass.

The meteor that passed through Russian skies on Friday was the largest to reach Earth in a century. Its explosion was brighter than the sun and powerful enough to send damaging shockwaves to the Earth’s surface. Other meteors have impacted the world in big and small ways.
It was surely the most thoroughly documented meteor in human history — captured by countless crack-of-dawn Russian drivers who own dashboard cameras.
The spectacle capped an extraordinary day for the planet. The object, which exploded over the industrial city of Chelyabinsk, caused the largest such impact in more than a century and was the first to inflict significant human casualties, with at least 48 victims hospitalized.
The asteroid that was supposed to show up Friday, the much-hyped 2012 DA14, passed by harmlessly, just as the experts had promised it would.
But they had no way of seeing the other rock heading toward Russia. The explanation from NASA scientists, when asked why they hadn’t spotted it, boiled down to two simple facts: It was small, and the sun was in their eyes.
“This was the largest object observed to hit the Earth since 1908,” said Margaret Campbell-Brown, an astronomer at the University of Western Ontario. That’s when another space rock exploded over Siberia, leveling 800 square miles of forest in what became known as the Tunguska event.
On Friday, a global network of sensors recorded the space rock’s object’s descent and revealed its stunning power. It measured about 50
feet wide, weighed more than a nuclear-powered submarine and screamed in at 40,000 miles per hour, said Campbell-Brown, who examined data from sonic sensors deployed by the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization to detect nuclear detonations.
In its 30-second shallow-angle dive into the thickening atmosphere, the meteor shed energy equivalent to more than 20 Hiroshima-size atomic bombs. Most of that energy was dissipated many miles above the surface, and, in a sense, the atmosphere saved the day, preventing catastrophic damage from a major surface impact.
Initial estimates from Russian authorities sketched a much smaller and weaker object, but scientists say the nuclear-sensor network provides the best measure an incoming asteroid’s size and power.
Intense heat and pressure shattered the object into dozens of large pieces during its descent. Russian officials said they believed they had identified meteorite fragments on the ground 50 miles west of Chelyabinsk and had reports of pieces stretched out over another 75 miles.
Searchers also found a circular hole in the ice, 15 to 20 feet across, in a lake west of Chelyabinsk, and roped it off.
A transcript from a meeting of Russian emergency officials indicated about 3,000 buildings suffered damage.
