He said that the disease was not unusual and some deaths had occurred earlier but this time, more Markhors had fallen prey. “This happens when the habitat of the Markhors is disturbed due to deforestation,” he explained, adding that another reason for the spread could be fertilisers. “There are chances that these young Markhors got infected as they ate fertilised crops,” he said. The official said that they had the bodies examined in a lab to determine the disease. “It’s called ‘foot-and-mouth’ disease. Small pimples appear in and around the corners of mouth,” he said. The animal carcasses have been left in the wild for predators to eat, he said. He said that the Markhors found in Chitral are known as the Kashmiri Markhor. “They can be spotted along the west bank of Kunar River between Shogore and Arandu and Drosh on its eastern bank. They can also be seen along tributaries of the Matuj River as far as Barenis,” he said. Kashmir Markhore is one of the most precious wild animals whose price in the international market is over $80,000, which means that Chitral stands to lose up to $9.6 million. “Diseases are transmittable and sheep and animal herds carry the risk of spreading the disease,” he said.

Those complaining of the baffling fever are also more by the day as doctors say the cases pouring in have increased by 60%. The symptoms include high fever, stomach pain and low platelet count. While the patients and their families have failed to understand the cause of this fever, doctors too are not clear about what is causing it. From next to no case till a few months ago, as many as seven people are daily being now diagnosed with this fever these days. A doctor is Apollo Hospital's medicine department, Gautam Aggarwal, said, "I am treating as many as eight such patients every day. Monsoons have brought some viral and bacterial infections and this one seems unclassified." Most of those suffering from the ailment include people in the age group of 15 to 45 years. "Though the cause is still a mystery, it takes nearly four days for a patient to recover from the fever. People must take precautions but even these can become ineffective as the infections are air-borne," the doctor added. Medical superintendent of Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital R S Sodhi said more than 50 patients of mystery fever visit the hospital every week. "The numbers have gone up tremendously. It is a non-specific form of fever and cannot be diagnosed as the city lacks testing equipment," Sodhi added. Amit Berry, a doctor at DMC Hospital, said they had started receiving patients of mystery fever, adding the number might increase during the coming months. "We call it viral but nobody is sure about the type of fever," he added. Sangeeta Sharma, a resident of Vikas Nagar, said her 15-year-old son was suffering from this fever, adding the doctors called it seasonal viral fever. "My son Rohan does not eat out... we're not sure what caused the malady," she added.

Situation:

Auckland's measles epidemic is worsening with health officials saying new cases coming from overseas are adding to the woes. The latest outbreak is linked to a Thai Airways flight, TG491, which landed in Auckland on June 19 with a passenger in the early stages of measles and capable of infecting others. It has led to warnings to anyone on the plane to have check-ups and brings the total number with measles confirmed to 39 - the largest outbreak the region has seen this year. "All passengers onboard the flight who have not had the right number of measles immunisations for their age, or are unsure, should be vigilant if they suspect they could have measles," said Auckland Regional Public Health Service Medical Officer of Health, Dr Richard Hoskins.



"We will be trying to contact a number of passengers who were sitting close to the passenger with measles," Hoskins said. "Anyone, including passengers on Thai Airways flight TG491 on June 19, displaying symptoms of measles should immediately telephone their doctor, or Healthline on 0800 611 116, for advice. It is important to call first because measles is highly infectious and people with it can infect others in the waiting room," said Hoskins. The Bangkok measles case is just one of nine separate outbreaks medical authorities are dealing with. Hoskins said the nine outbreaks were not able to be linked to cases from Oratia, where the alarm first started. He says the focus now must be on immunisation. "Given the level of community spread, this is the only option remaining to try to limit the spread of measles," said Hoskins. "Immunisation is the only way to avoid getting measles. The vaccination is funded for children, young people and unimmunised adults." "These new cases have been in several early childhood centres and we are now working with those centres to quarantine susceptible contacts at home in case they develop measles," Hoskins said. "We strongly advise all children receive two doses of the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine at 15 months and four years. We also strongly advise catch up vaccinations for adolescents and adults who have had either none, or only one dose, of the MMR vaccine - particularly if they are intending to travel overseas."

Test results confirmed that an 18-year-old man died of the disease on Monday after being hospitalized a day earlier, said Dang Thi Thanh of southern Kien Giang province's health department. She said the man was working at a duck farm in neighbouring Can Tho City when he fell sick with a high fever and breathing problems. His house has been disinfected and those who were in contact with him remain under surveillance. No sick or dead poultry have been reported on the two farms where the man worked or among neighboring flocks, but samples have been collected for analysis and the farms have been disinfected, said Huynh Thi Khai Hoan, an animal health officer in Can Tho City. However, many of the ducks on the farms where the man worked had already been sold. H5N1 rarely infects humans and usually only those who come in direct contact with diseased poultry, but experts fear it will mutate into a new form that passes easily from person to person. Other human bird flu cases have been reported recently in Cambodia, Indonesia, Egypt and China. The World Health Organization says globally there have been 341 human deaths from 578 confirmed bird flu cases since 2003. About 60 of those deaths occurred in Vietnam. Before Monday, Vietnam had not seen a human bird flu death since April 2010, according to the Ministry of Health's Preventive Medicine Department.
