Mexico - The Mexican National Institute of Anthropology and History have admitted that they have a second reference to the date 2012 as "end of the world" on a carved fragment found at an archaeological site in southern Mexico.
Salt Lake Tribune reports that archaeologists have long acknowledged that reference to date 2012 as "end of the world" is found on a stone tablet from the Tortuguero site in the Gulf coast state of Tabasco. But on Thursday, the Mexican National Institute of Anthropology and History announced that there is what appears another reference to the same date in an inscription on a brick found at the Camalcalco ruin. According to a spokesman for the institute Arturo Mendez, the inscription had been known for years and has been carefully studied by experts. Some experts, however, dispute that the "Comalcalco Brick" inscription really makes reference to dates (December 21, 2012 or December 23, 2012) that some have said is the end of the world. The "Comalcalco Brick" inscription, like the previous Tortuguero inscription, is difficult to interpret because it is cryptic. The Tortuguero inscription, for instance, makes prophetic reference to uncertain but possibly cataclysmic events to occur in 2012, in connection with the Mayan god of war and creation. The mystery of the message in the Tortuguero inscription is complicated by an illegible ending, though some have claimed the eroded text reads "He will descend from the sky." Salt Lake Tribune reports that the face of the "Comalcalco Brick" which carries the "prophetic message" appears to have been covered with stucco and laid facing inward. This is taken to imply the message on the brick is a sacred message not meant for profane eyes. However, a specialist in Mayan inscriptions at the University of Texas, Austin, David Stuart, said, "[though] some have proposed it as another reference to 2012...I remain rather unconvinced." Stuart explains that what the brick contains is a "Calender Round," that is, day and month combination that will recur every 52 years. According to David Stuart, the date on the brick coincides with end of the 13th Baktun, a 394-year period. With the Mayan Long Count calender starting in 3114 B.C., the 13th Baktun will end around December 21, 2012. But according to Stuart,

"There’s no reason it couldn’t be also a date in ancient times, describing some important historical event in the Classic period. In fact, the third glyph on the brick seems to read as the verb huli, 'he/she/it arrives.' There’s no future tense marking [unlike the Tortuguero phrase], which in my mind points more to the Comalcalco date being more historical than prophetic."​

</center> Boston Herald reports that the Institute of Anthropology and History says belief that the Mayans prophesied the world will end in December 2012 is misinterpretation of Mayan calender and thought. Newser reports that the Institute of Anthropology and History, in a statement on Thursday, said,

"Western messianic thought has twisted the cosmo-vision of ancient civilizations like the Maya." ​

The experts, according to Newser, say rather than speak of the end of the world, the Mayans had a cyclical notion of historical time. Cyclical renewal of historical time, the experts say, was not associated with or essentially linked to apocalyptic events. The announcement of what appears a second reference, in Mayan archaeological relics, to late December 2012 as "end of the world," has, predictably, fueled speculations on Internet. The Mexican National Institute of Anthropology and History is organizing a forum for 60 Mayan experts at the archaeological site of Palenque to address the rumors that the Mayan Long Count calender predicts the world to end in December, 2012.

Earth's Inconstant Magnetic Field

<!--Promo date and doctitle ends--><CENTER>Our planet's magnetic field is in a constant state of change, say researchers who are beginning to understand how it behaves and why.</CENTER>Every few years, scientist Larry Newitt of the Geological Survey of Canada goes hunting. He grabs his gloves, parka, a fancy compass, hops on a plane and flies out over the Canadian arctic. Not much stirs among the scattered islands and sea ice, but Newitt's prey is there--always moving, shifting, elusive.

His quarry is Earth's north magnetic pole.
At the moment it's located in northern Canada, about 600 km from the nearest town: Resolute Bay, population 300, where a popular T-shirt reads "Resolute Bay isn't the end of the world, but you can see it from here." Newitt stops there for snacks and supplies--and refuge when the weather gets bad. "Which is often," he says.

Scientists have long known that the magnetic pole moves. James Ross located the pole for the first time in 1831 after an exhausting arctic journey during which his ship got stuck in the ice for four years. No one returned until the next century. In 1904, Roald Amundsen found the pole again and discovered that it had moved--at least 50 km since the days of Ross.
The pole kept going during the 20th century, north at an average speed of 10 km per year, lately accelerating "to 40 km per year," says Newitt. At this rate it will exit North America and reach Siberia in a few decades.
Keeping track of the north magnetic pole is Newitt's job. "We usually go out and check its location once every few years," he says. "We'll have to make more trips now that it is moving so quickly."
Earth's magnetic field is changing in other ways, too: Compass needles in Africa, for instance, are drifting about 1 degree per decade. And globally the magnetic field has weakened 10% since the 19th century. When this was mentioned by researchers at a recent meeting of the American Geophysical Union, many newspapers carried the story. A typical headline: "Is Earth's magnetic field collapsing?"
Probably not. As remarkable as these changes sound, "they're mild compared to what Earth's magnetic field has done in the past," says University of California professor Gary Glatzmaier.

Sometimes the field completely flips. The north and the south poles swap places. Such reversals, recorded in the magnetism of ancient rocks, are unpredictable. They come at irregular intervals averaging about 300,000 years; the last one was 780,000 years ago. Are we overdue for another? No one knows.

According to Glatzmaier, the ongoing 10% decline doesn't mean that a reversal is imminent. "The field is increasing or decreasing all the time," he says. "We know this from studies of the paleomagnetic record." Earth's present-day magnetic field is, in fact, much stronger than normal. The dipole moment, a measure of the intensity of the magnetic field, is now 8 x 1022 amps x m2. That's twice the million-year average of 4 x 1022 amps x m2.
To understand what's happening, says Glatzmaier, we have to take a trip ... to the center of the Earth where the magnetic field is produced.
At the heart of our planet lies a solid iron ball, about as hot as the surface of the sun. Researchers call it "the inner core." It's really a world within a world. The inner core is 70% as wide as the moon. It spins at its own rate, as much as 0.2o of longitude per year faster than the Earth above it, and it has its own ocean: a very deep layer of liquid iron known as "the outer core."

Earth's magnetic field comes from this ocean of iron, which is an electrically conducting fluid in constant motion. Sitting atop the hot inner core, the liquid outer core seethes and roils like water in a pan on a hot stove. The outer core also has "hurricanes"--whirlpools powered by the Coriolis forces of Earth's rotation. These complex motions generate our planet's magnetism through a process called the dynamo effect.
Using the equations of magnetohydrodynamics, a branch of physics dealing with conducting fluids and magnetic fields, Glatzmaier and colleague Paul Roberts have created a supercomputer model of Earth's interior. Their software heats the inner core, stirs the metallic ocean above it, then calculates the resulting magnetic field. They run their code for hundreds of thousands of simulated years and watch what happens.
What they see mimics the real Earth: The magnetic field waxes and wanes, poles drift and, occasionally, flip. Change is normal, they've learned. And no wonder. The source of the field, the outer core, is itself seething, swirling, turbulent. "It's chaotic down there," notes Glatzmaier. The changes we detect on our planet's surface are a sign of that inner chaos.
They've also learned what happens during a magnetic flip. Reversals take a few thousand years to complete, and during that time--contrary to popular belief--the magnetic field does not vanish. "It just gets more complicated," says Glatzmaier. Magnetic lines of force near Earth's surface become twisted and tangled, and magnetic poles pop up in unaccustomed places. A south magnetic pole might emerge over Africa, for instance, or a north pole over Tahiti. Weird. But it's still a planetary magnetic field, and it still protects us from space radiation and solar storms.

And, as a bonus, Tahiti could be a great place to see the Northern Lights. In such a time, Larry Newitt's job would be different. Instead of shivering in Resolute Bay, he could enjoy the warm South Pacific, hopping from island to island, hunting for magnetic poles while auroras danced overhead.
Sometimes, maybe, a little change can be a good thing.

ทางด้าน ศ.นพ.เทพนม เมืองแมน ระบุว่า ภายในปี 2557 โลกจะเผชิญกับการเปลี่ยนขั้วแม่เหล็กโลก แบบกลับเหนือ-ใต้ ซึ่งจะทำให้เกิดพายุหมุน แผ่นดินไหว อุณหภูมิโลกเปลี่ยน
และไทยยังต้องเผชิญกับหิมะตก

เชื่อกันว่า การกลับขั้วของแม่เหล็กโลกนั้น เกิดขึ้นเมื่อการไหลเวียนของนิกเกิลเหลว (liquid nickel) และเหล็กเหลว (liquid iron) ในแกนกลางชั้นนอกของโลก กระจัดกระจาย

จากนั้น ก็จัดเรียงตัวใหม่ ในทิศทางตรงกันข้าม แต่ยังไม่มีใครทราบ ถึงสาเหตุของการกระจัดกระจายดังกล่าว

หลักฐานการกลับขั้ว พบได้ในสันเขากลางมหาสมุทร (mid-ocean ridges) ซึ่งแผ่นเปลือกโลกเทคโทนิค (tectonic plates) ได้แยกออกจากกัน และที่ก้นมหาสมุทร ก็เต็มไปด้วยแมกมา ซึ่งไหลซึมออกมาจากเปลือกโลกชั้นใน (mantle)

อนุภาคแม่เหล็ก ในของเหลวร้อนดังกล่าว ได้พลิกทิศทางของสนามแม่เหล็กโลก ในเวลานั้น

ทั้งนี้ ขั้วแม่เหล็กโลกกับขั้วโลก (Geographic pole) นั้น เป็นคนละขั้ว และไม่ได้อยู่ตำแหน่งเดียวกัน จากข้อมูลของหน่วยงานสำรวจทางธรณีวิทยาแห่งแคนาดา (Geological Survey of Canada) ระบุว่า

ในช่วง 330 ล้านปี ที่ผ่านมา มีการกลับขั้วของขั้วแม่เหล็กโลก มากกว่า 400 ครั้ง โดยเฉลี่ย 700,000 ปี จะเกิดขึ้นสักครั้ง แต่ช่วงเวลาระหว่างการกลับขั้ว ก็ไม่คงที่ บางครั้งเกิดห่างกันน้อยกว่า 100,000 ปี

และการคำนวณพบว่า ช่วงหลังการกลับขั้ว เกิดขึ้นทุกๆ 200,000 ปี แต่การกลับขั้วครั้งล่าสุด เกิดขึ้นเมื่อ 780,000 ปีที่แล้ว

ขณะเดียวกัน นายวรวุฒิ ตันติวนิช ผู้เชี่ยวชาญเฉพาะด้าน ที่ปรึกษาทางการบริหารจัดการทรัพยากรธรณี กรมทรัพยากรธรณี กระทรวงทรัพยากรธรรมชาติและสิ่งแวดล้อม ได้ให้ข้อมูลว่า

การเปลี่ยนแปลงขั้วแม่เหล็ก เป็นเรื่องปกติโดยพบมาหลายพันครั้งแล้วในอดีต แต่ขั้วแม่เหล็กโลก ไม่ได้เปลี่ยนแปลงมานานพอสมควร โดยครั้งสุดท้าย เกิดขึ้นประมาณ 2 ล้านปี

ซึ่งเป็นช่วงที่มีมนุษย์คนแรกเกิดขึ้นแล้ว และการเปลี่ยนแปลงครั้งนั้น ก็ไม่ได้ทำให้มนุษย์สูญพันธุ์แต่อย่างใด

"นักวิทยาศาสตร์ จึงคาดกันว่า การเปลี่ยนแปลงขั้วแม่เหล็กโลก ไม่น่าจะทำให้เกิดภัยพิบัติรุนแรงถึงมนุษย์ขั้นสูญพันธุ์ แต่ผลกระทบ อาจเกิดแก่เทคโนโลยีใหม่ๆ ที่ต้องอาศัยคลื่นแม่เหล็กไฟฟ้า

อาทิ การสื่อสารวิทยุ โทรศัพท์มือถือ อุปกรณ์ที่มีมอเตอร์ และได้นาโม เป็นต้น รวมทั้งสุขภาพของคน

เนื่องจาก สนามแม่เหล็กโลก จะช่วยปกป้องสิ่งมีชีวิต จากรังสีนอกโลก หากมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงก็อาจทำให้พลังงานจากนอกโลกเข้ามาทำอันตรายสิ่งมีชีวิตได้" นายวรวุฒิกล่าว

พร้อมระบุว่า มีการศึกษาเรื่องการกลับขั้วแม่เหล็กโลกไม่มากนัก จึงยังไม่แน่ใจว่า การเปลี่ยนแปลงขั้วแม่เหล็กโลกนั้น เกิดขึ้นอย่างค่อยเป็นค่อยไป หรือเกิดขึ้นอย่างกะทันหัน แต่ก็พบว่า ขั้วแม่เหล็กโลกกำลังค่อยๆ เคลื่อนที่ ออกจากแคนาดา

เมื่อปี 2374 นักวิทยาศาสตร์ของแคนาดา ได้เดินเรือสำรวจขั้วแม่เหล็กเหนือ (North Magenetic Pole) ของโลกเป็นครั้งแรก และคาดว่า มีตำแหน่งอยู่บริเวณชายฝั่งตะวันตกของคาบสมุทรบูเธีย (Boothia Peninsula) ซึ่งอยู่ตอนเหนือสุดของแคนาดา

จากนั้น ก็มีการสำรวจตำแหน่งของขั้วแม่เหล็กเหนือ มาเรื่อยๆ และพบตำแหน่งที่ต่างกัน โดยระหว่างศตวรรษที่ 20 นี้ ขั้วแม่เหล็กเหนือ ได้เปลี่ยนตำแหน่งไป ราว 1,100 กิโลเมตรแล้ว

ปัจจุบันพบว่า ความเป็นของการเปลี่ยนแปลงตำแหน่งขั้วแม่เหล็กโลก ได้เพิ่มขึ้นเป็น 41 กิโลเมตรต่อปี

หากการเปลี่ยนแปลงตำแหน่ง เกิดขึ้นด้วยความเร็วเท่าเดิม ในทิศทางเดิม ขั้วแม่เหล็กเหนือ จะไปอยู่บริเวณไซบีเรีย ในอีก 50 ปีข้างหน้า

อย่างไรก็ดี ยังไม่มีข้อมูลที่ชัดเจนว่า การเปลี่ยนแปลงของขั้วแม่เหล็กโลกนั้น จะส่งผลกระทบต่อสิ่งมีชีวิตอย่างไรบ้าง

มีเพียงจินตนาการจากภาพยนตร์ แสดงให้เห็นความหนาวเย็น ที่ไม่อาจคาดเดาว่า จะเกิดขึ้นจริงหรือไม่ ขณะที่การสำรวจตำแหน่งของแม่เหล็กโลก ก็ยังคงดำเนินต่อไป

เมื่อเร็วๆ มานี้ องค์การ NASA ได้เคยทำให้สาธารณะชน เกิดความหวาดหวั่น ด้วยการออกมาเปิดเผยว่า การพลิกกลับของขั้วแม่เหล็กโลก จะทำให้ความเข้มข้นของสนามแม่เหล็กโลกอ่อนลง และไร้ความมั่นคง แต่ไม่ถึงกับลดลงถึงระดับศูนย์

แต่จากการศึกษาร่วมกัน ของนักวิทยาศาสตร์ด้านคอมพิวเตอร์จำนวนหนึ่ง กับกลุ่มนักธรณีฟิสิกส์ และนักดาราศาสตร์ฟิสิกส์ พบว่า

ทั้งโลกและดวงอาทิตย์ จะสิ้นสุดระยะเวลา ที่ใช้ในกระบวนการพลิกกลับของขั้วแม่เหล็ก (Magnetic Pole Reversal) ในปี ค.ศ. 2012

โดยครั้งล่าสุด กระบวนการนี้ ได้เกิดขึ้นเมื่อหลายล้านปีที่ผ่านมา จนทำให้สัตว์จำพวกไดโนเสาร์สูญพันธุ์จนหมดสิ้น

จากการค้นคว้าวิจัย และการวิเคราะห์ร่วมกันใน Hyderabad ได้คาดการณ์ว่า การเปลี่ยนแปลงอย่างรุนแรงครั้งใหม่นี้ จะเกิดขึ้นในปี ค.ศ. 2012

คำถาม......? โลกจะเป็นอย่างไร เมื่อขั้วแม่เหล็กโลกกำลังพลิกด้าน

การพลิกกลับของขั้วแม่เหล็กโลก คือ กระบวนการที่ขั้วแม่เหล็กเหนือ และขั้วแม่เหล็กใต้สลับตำแหน่งกัน เมื่อการพลิกกลับของขั้วแม่เหล็กนี้เกิดขึ้น ณ ขณะเวลาใดเวลาหนึ่ง

(ซึ่งไม่สามารถทำนายได้ว่า จะกินเวลานานเท่าใด อาจกินเวลาแค่ 1 ช.ม. หรืออาจเป็นเดือนก็ได้)

มันหมายถึงว่า ค่าการเหนี่ยวนำของสนามแม่เหล็กโลกจะลดลง จนมีค่าเป็นศูนย์หน่วยกาซ และโลก

โดยปกติสนามแม่เหล็กโลก จะเป็นเสมือนโล่กำบัง ที่ช่วยปกป้องโลกไว้อีกชั้นหนึ่ง โดยเฉพาะ การช่วยกำบังโลกจากพายุสุริยะ ที่เกิดจากดวงอาทิตย์

แต่เมื่อไม่มีสนามแม่เหล็กโลก ในเวลาที่ว่านั้น สิ่งมีชีวิตบนโลก จะต้องเจอกับหายนะ นั่นก็คือ พายุสุริยะ

พายุสุริยะ คือ พลังงานที่เกิดจากปฏิกิริยานิวเคลียร์ ที่เกิดจากธาตุไฮโดรเจน บนพื้นผิวดวงอาทิตย์ ซึ่งจะถูกปล่อยออกมาสู่อวกาศ ด้วยแรงระเบิดมหาศาล

ซึ่งพายุสุริยะนั้น ประกอบด้วย รังสีคอสมิก และรังสีอีกมากมาย รวมถึงคลื่นแม่เหล็กไฟฟ้าอันมหาศาล

คำถาม........? เราจะเป็นอย่างไรเมื่อต้องเผชิญกับพายุสุริยะ

"ฮารัลด์ เลสช์" (Harald Lesch) ศาสตราจารย์จากมหาวิทยาลัย "มิวนิค" ได้สร้างแบบจำลองสนามแม่เหล็กโลก ขึ้นมาศึกษาในเรื่องนี้เป็นการเฉพาะ เพื่อหาคำตอบว่า โลกเราจะเป็นอย่างไร หากไม่มีสนามแม่เหล็ก

แบบจำลองที่ "ฮารัลด์ เลสช์" สร้างขึ้นพบว่า ถ้าโลกเราถูกพายุสุริยะกระหน่ำ ผลที่ได้สร้างความประหลาดใจอย่างยิ่ง

จากภาพจำลองที่คอมพิวเตอร์สร้างขึ้น แสดงให้เห็นว่า เมื่อมวลอนุภาคคลื่นแม่เหล็กไฟฟ้าจากพายุสุริยะมาถึงโลก จะทำปฏิกิริยากับชั้นบรรยากาศ เกิดเป็นสนามแม่เหล็กชุดใหม่มาแทนที่

และทรงพลังพอ ที่จะทานแรงปะทะของรังสีคอสมิก ทำให้รังสีคอสมิก ที่เป็นอันตรายจากดวงอาทิตย์ เบนออกสู่อวกาศ

แต่ทว่า โลกเรานั้น สามารถรอดพ้นจากอันตรายจากรังสีคอสมิกไปได้ แต่สิ่งที่จะเกิดขึ้นจากกระบวนการนี้ ไม่ได้เป็นผลดีต่อสิ่งมีชีวิตบนโลกเลย

ตามหลักแล้ว กระแสไฟฟ้าจะไหลไปสู่ที่ๆ มีความต่างศักย์ที่น้อยกว่า และสนามแม่เหล็กชุดใหม่ ที่จะเกิดขึ้นจากคลื่นแม่เหล็กไฟฟ้านั้น ไม่ได้เสถียรเหมือนแม่เหล็กโลกเดิม

ฉะนั้น คลื่นแม่เหล็กไฟฟ้า ที่ทำปฏิกิริยากับบรรยากาศโลก ย่อมไม่ได้หยุดอยู่เพียงแค่นั้น สิ่งที่คลื่นแม่เหล็กไฟฟ้า จะกระทำต่อไปนั้นก็คือ การปลดปล่อยพลังงานไฟฟ้าอันมหาศาลสู่ที่ๆ มีความต่างศักย์ที่น้อยกว่า นั่นก็คือ พื้นผิวโลก

เหตุการณ์ที่ว่านี้คือ พายุฟ้าผ่านั่นเอง พายุฟ้าผ่านี้ อาจกินเนื้อที่ทั้งทวีป หรือทั่วโลก สายฟ้าที่กระหน่ำลงมา จากก้อนเมฆอิเล็กตรอนนั้น จะกระหน่ำผ่าลงมาทุกๆ ที่ โดยไม่หยุด จนกว่าพลังงานคลื่นแม่เหล็กไฟฟ้า จากพายุสุริยะจะหมดลง

และจะเกิดขึ้นอีก ถ้าพายุสุริยะลูกต่อไปมาถึง หรือจนกว่า การกลับขั้วของแม่เหล็กโลกจะเสร็จสมบูรณ์ จนทำให้กระบวนการสร้างสนามแม่เหล็กโลก จะทำงานได้อีก

สิ่งมีชีวิตบนโลกมากมายจะต้องตาย และเทคโนโลยีต่างๆ ที่มนุษย์สร้างขึ้น จะถูกทำลายลงในครั้งนี้ แต่ถ้ารังสีคอสมิก สามารถหลุดรอด มาจากสนามแม่เหล็กไฟฟ้าได้ สิ่งมีชีวิตที่รอดจากการถูกฟ้าผ่า ก็อาจจะต้องตาย จากโรคมะเร็งและความร้อน

คำถาม........? เมื่อสนามแม่เหล็กโลก เกิดการพลิกตัวอย่างสมบูรณ์ จะเกิดอะไรขึ้นกับโลก

สิ่งที่จะกล่าวต่อไปนี้ อาจะเหลือเชื่อ แต่ตามหลักการแล้ว ย่อมเป็นไปได้ การพลิกด้านของขั้วแม่เหล็กโลกนี้ ไม่ได้ทำให้เกิดความหายนะ จากพายุสุริยะแค่เพียงอย่างเดียว แต่อาจเกิดหายนะ จากการหมุนกลับทางของโลก ที่จะเกิดตามมาอีก

ยกตัวอย่าง เช่น การหมุนของมอเตอร์

มอเตอร์แบบธรรมดามี 2 ขั้ว โดยให้สัญลักษณ์ A และ B ก่อนที่ขั้วแม่เหล็กโลกจะพลิกตัว ให้เปรียบโดยการใช้ ไฟฟ้าขั้ว + ต่อเข้ากับ A และไฟฟ้าขั้ว - ต่อเข้ากับ B มอเตอร์จะหมุนไปทางใดทางหนึ่ง

แต่เมื่อเราต่อขั้วไฟฟ้ากลับด้านกัน ย่อมทำให้มอเตอร์ เกิดการหมุนทิศทางตรงกันข้ามกับครั้งแรก และนี่ ก็เปรียบกับการพลิกด้าน ของขั้วแม่เหล็กโลกนั่นเอง

น่าแปลกใจว่า เพราะอะไร คำการทำนายจากหลายแหล่ง ตรงกันที่ปี ค.ศ. 2012 (พ.ศ. 2555)


ประกาศจากองค์การ NASA ระบุว่า วันที่ 22 ธันวาคม ค.ศ. 2012 (พ.ศ. 2555) วันนั้น แกนโลกของเรา จะพลิกกลับขั้ว คือ ขั้วโลกเหนือจะมาอยู่ที่ขั้วโลกใต้

ขณะที่ดวงอาทิตย์กำลังพลิกกลับขั้วนั้น ดวงอาทิตย์จะแผ่สนามแม่เหล็ก และรังสีความร้อนสูงมายังโลก ซึ่งเป็นช่วงเวลาเดียวกับที่โลก ไม่มีสนามแม่เหล็กป้องกันตัวเอง

คำทำนายเรื่องวันสิ้นโลกนี้ มาจากวันในปฏิทินของชาวเผ่ามายัน ซึ่งทำนายว่า จะสิ้นสุดลงในวันที่ 21 ธันวาคม ปี ค.ศ. 2012 ไม่ว่าจะทางใด ดูจากหลาย ๆ ทางแล้ว ชี้ไปในปีเดียวกัน
