People in north Donegal were left shaken, but hopefully not too stirred, last night when an earthquake tremor hit the region. Tom Blake, a geophysicist at the Dublin School for Advanced Studies confirmed that a 2.2 magnitude tremor struck north Donegal at 1.04 am. The tremor was recorded at a seismic monitoring station in Inishowen.

The station was set up and is operated in association with LYIT and North West Electronics. The tremor was also recorded at St. Columba's National School and St. Egney's Desertegney, where equipment has been in place for some time. According to the Donegal Weather Channel, hundreds of people felt the tremor right across north Donegal, areas affected included Letterkenny, Buncrana, Kilmacrennan, Raphoe, Ramelton, Carrigard and Downings.

"There most certainly will be more but we can't say when. Donegal sees seismic activity fairly frequently compared to the rest of the country except for Wexford. "There is a major fault that extends from Scotland through the north of Donegal specifically goes under the Urris hills, Lough Swilly and the Knockalla range." Tremors were felt here almost two years ago to the day. A 1.6 tremor was recorded on Jaunary 25, 2010 and a similar one again on January 27, 2010. Prior to that, the largest recorded tremor to hit Donegal, a 2.4, struck in February 2008.

An earthquake measuring 5.3 magnitude on the Richter scale jolted the islands of Crete and Cyclades in the Aegean Sea in southern Greece on Thursday, without reported casualties. According to the Geodynamic Institute of Athens, the epicentre of the quake was traced 48 km southwest of Santorini at a depth of 30 km, Greek scientists said. Local authorities have reported no injuries or major material damage. Initially the EuroMediterannean Seismic Institute had estimated a moderate tremor measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale tracing the epicentre at 78 km northwest of the city of Herakleion in Crete.

The tremor was felt in a major part of the Aegean Sea, including Crete, Santorini, Cyclades, Rhodes and eastern Peloponnese. In comments in local media, Athens University Geology School Professor Efthymios Lekkas reassured that there was no reason for anxiety over the quake. Greece is regularly hit by moderate earthquakes throughout the year. The earthquake-prone country has been hit by devastating tremors many times in recent history, more than any other European country.

In addition, satellite images from 24 Jan show the presence of thermal anomalies at the volcano. Sangay is one of the most active volcanoes in Ecuador, in frequent activity since the 17th century when it was discovered. However, due to its very remote location, at the eastern end of the Andes cordillera, its monitoring is limited to occasional field observations and observations by aircraft and from satellite.

    Mega volcanoes 'may be predicted'

By Neil Bowdler Science and health reporter, BBC News [IMG] An artist's impression of multiple eruptions as a "super volcano" explodes. The new research suggests we may be able to predict such events decades earlier
Continue reading the main story Related Stories

The eruption of some of the largest volcanoes on the planet could be predicted several decades before the event, according to researchers.
Analysis of rock crystals from the Greek island of Santorini suggests eruptions are preceded by a fast build-up of magma underground, which might be detected using modern instrumentation.
Such volcanoes can produce enough ash and gas to temporarily change the global climate.
The research is in the journal Nature.
Volcanologists refer to history's largest volcanoes as "caldera-forming eruptions", as the magma ejected is so voluminous that it leaves a massive depression on the Earth's surface and a crater-like structure known as a caldera.
Continue reading the main story “Start Quote

If you had a big eruption of this sort in the middle of Europe today, the effects would be enormous”
Tim Druitt Blaise Pascal University, France
The largest of these volcanoes have been dubbed "supervolcanoes" and their eruptions can trigger devastation with global impacts.
Such volcanoes can lie dormant for hundreds of thousands of years before blowing. But while researchers believe seismic data and other readings would give us a few month's notice of such an eruption, the new study suggests we might anticipate these events much earlier.
"When volcanoes awaken and when the magma starts to ascend to the surface, cracking rock as it does, it sends out signals," Prof Tim Druitt of France's Blaise Pascal University and lead researcher told BBC News.
"You get seismic signals, you get deformation of the surface, increasing gas emission at the surface - and this can be detected.
"The question we're addressing here is what's going on at depth prior to these big eruptions. The classical view was that during long repose periods over thousands of years, magma slowly accumulates a few kilometres below the volcano and finally it blows.
[IMG] The Greek island of Santorini is actually the remains of a massive volcanic eruption
"What we're finding is that there's an acceleration phase of magma build-up on a time scale of a few decades, and that's surprisingly short given the thousands of years of repose that have preceded that eruption."
The evidence comes from analysis of crystals in pumice rock from the Santorini site, which the researchers in France, Switzerland and Singapore analysed using modern instrumentation including electron and ion microprobes.
"The changes in composition of the crystals with time provide little histories of how the magma itself has evolved," said Prof Druitt.
"What we found was that all the crystals in the magma grew within a few decades of the eruption."
Early warning Caldera-forming eruption sites can be found all over the world, although it is believed that all are currently dormant. They include sites in Yellowstone National Park in the United States, Campi Flegrei in Italy and Santorini and its accompanying islands.
The eruption at the latter site over 3,600 years ago is called the "Minoan" eruption as it occurred at the height of the Minoan civilisation on the nearby island of Crete and was once thought to have caused its collapse, although that is now a moot point.
Predicting such events years rather than months before they happen could prove vital, says Prof Druitt.
"What we're saying is that all caldera volcanoes, even those in remote regions of the globe, should be monitored using highly sensitive modern instruments in order to pick up these deep signals which may suggest reactivation," he said.
"If you had a big eruption of this sort, let's say in the middle of Europe today, the effects would be enormous and a few months might not be enough to get your act together."
[IMG] A volcanic "caldera" like this one on the Galapagos Islands can change the global climate when they erupt
Commenting on the paper, Prof David Pyle, a volcanologist from Oxford University said: "This new work on Santorini sheds new light on what happens in the lead-up to the rare catastrophic eruptions, like the Bronze Age 'Minoan' eruption, which happen every 20,000 years or so.
"The new evidence from mineral grains appears to strengthen the idea, which has been developing in recent years, that large magma systems appear to awaken from long periods of repose only shortly (months, years or decades) prior to eruption.
"That is, the magma which eventually erupts appears to rise into position, in the top few kilometres of the crust, only a short time before the eruption begins."
However, he said the next problem was to try to understand what was causing this accelerated build up of magma.
"The challenge for volcanologists is to understand what it is that causes these bursts of melt movement; to understand where the melts have come from, and to be able to recognise their signals before an eruption begins."

Only small to moderate eruptions had been occurring over most of the past year. Between 29 December and 15 January, 8 explosions were counted which produced ash clouds up to 600 m high. One explosion threw incandescent bombs to a distance of 300 m from the Jonggring Seloko crater. During 15-29 January, only weak explosions were recorded and a small steam and ash plume rising 25-50 m was observed. Between 30 and 31 January, 5 explosions were recorded. They produced incandescent fallout in up to 400 m distance. On 2 February at 07:47 local time, a stronger explosion produced incandescent bombs that reached 750 m distance and caused a small avalanche of blocks rolling down a distance of up to 2.5 km (note: no pyroclastic flows). The heightened activity triggered the raise in alert level the following day. At its present status level of 3, PVMBG recommends to stay away at least 4 km from the summit on the SE side of the volcano and climbers are advised not to approach the Jonggring Seloko crater less than 1 km. As of 6 February, no significant changes to its activity have been reported by our correspondent on location.

Kanlaon of possible eruption after the 6.9-magnitude earthquake. The governor made the appeal to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) to allay fears that the quake, which was followed by several aftershocks, may trigger the eruption of the volcano, although the Capitol’s Provincial Disaster Management Program (PDMP) office earlier said the quake may not trigger eruption. Water sources found near the vicinity of the volcano were believed to have been adversely affected, as indicated by water discoloration from these sources. Based on the updated report of PDMP head Vicfran Defante, the sulfur pool of Mambukal Resort is also affected. Residents in Barangay Minoyan in Murcia, which is close to Kanlaon volcano, reported that water coming from Kanlaon sources had turned black, making it unfit for drinking. The Municipal Government of Murcia and the office of third district Representative Albee Benitez have been supplying water to the affected residents. Water discoloration was also experienced in Moises Padilla, La Castellana and La Carlota, which are also near the volcano. Marañon reiterated his appeal to the public not to panic in case of earthquake and instead pray for the safety of everybody. He assured that the Provincial Government will extend assistance to the victims of the earthquake in Negros Oriental.

Cameroon: Residents Tremble as Mt. Cameroon Quakes

Residents of various settlements straddling the foot of Mt Cameroon in the country's southwest are increasingly panic-stricken. Over the past one week, they have been witnessing and reporting mild tremors and explosions on the highest geographical peak in West Africa.

Cracks on wall caused by tremor.

The most palpable of the protracting volcanic activities was recorded Friday night. A group of Norwegian and Chinese sightseers heading to the mountain summit truncated their sleep and engaged a hasty retreat when loud explosions awoke them at close to midnight.

"It was about 11:45 pm. We heard a heavy explosion followed by some earth vibrations. It lasted about 7 seconds. There were flames and sulphuric acid coming out of a spot where we found ash and we decided to go back down," Peter Linonge Buma, a guide accompanying the tourists recounted Saturday.

    มีลูกไฟและกรดกำมะถันพุงออกมาจากจุดนั้น ตรงที่เจอเถ้าถ่าน

Many residents of Buea, the administrative headquarters of the South West Region perched on the foot of the mountain, say they are on their toes. They are readying to vacate should the prolonging tremors and explosions gather intensity.

"I have packed a bag and made arrangements to leave town as soon as the vibrations and explosions begin to gather intensity. One never knows when a full-scale eruption may occur," Gladys Kang, a student at the University of Buea told CameroonPostline.com Saturday. "Look around. Some of my neighbors have already bolted their doors and left as they cannot stand the earth tremors we've been witnessing over the past week."

Geologists, trouping to Buea since the advent of the mild volcanic activity, have nonetheless been multiplying efforts at watering down the swelling fright. They are urging the population to remain calm, emphasizing that the ongoing abnormal behavior is routine for a volcanic highland of the stature of Mt Cameroon. They have been citing records to show that mild volcanic activity is but normal on the mountain.

The most recent eruptions on Mt Cameroon occurred in March 1999 and May 2000. The 4100-metre-high mountain lies along what geologists call the Cameroon volcanic line which stretches from the Gulf of Guinea to the northern parts of the country.

The Mysterious Missing Eruption of 1258 A.D.

So, where do you hide an eruption that might have been 8 times larger than the 1883 eruption of Krakatau in Indonesia?

Over the last few weeks, we've seen a number of high-profile studies come out looking at global climate that refer to a mystery. According to ice core and sediment core records from many places on the globe, there was a very large volcanic eruption in 1258 A.D. - so big that it injected somewhere between 190-270 megatonnes into the atmosphere (to put in another way, it produced between 300 and 600 megatonnes of sulfuric acid).

This would make the 1258 eruption ~8 times larger than Krakatau in 1883 and two times larger than Tambora in 1815 (when comparing their sulfate injection mass; Emile-Geay et al., 2008). So, how does the geologic community (or historical community for that matter) not have any record of such an massive eruption that happened less than 800 years ago?

First, I should discuss a little bit of the evidence for the 1258 A.D. eruption. As mentioned above, there is a record of increased sulfur and ash particles in ice cores from both the North and South Poles, along with other places such as sediment from Lake Malawi (Emile-Geay et al., 2008).

Now, many of these ice cores and sediment records have been dated, so we can correlate them across the globe (within error). The combined data points towards an eruption that occurred in 1258 (or possibly 1259) - in fact, based on some of the weather records from Europe, the date could be constrained to between January and mid-May 1258 (Stothers 2000).

    ภูเขาไฟ Alaska Cleveland กำลังจะมีการปะทุ

    Event: Volcano Activity
Location: USA State of Alaska Cleveland Volcano

    Situation:

Alaska's Cleveland volcano keeps grumbling away, with a lava dome continuing to grow, and the alert level remaining at "watch," according to the Alaska Volcano Observatory. A status update on Saturday said that the volcano continued to show activity, but that no elevated temperatures or ash emissions were evident from satellite imagery. Cleveland, about 45 miles from the nearest community of Nikolski, was raised to "watch" status on Jan. 31. At that time, the lava dome was observed at a diameter of about 130 feet. "The current lava dome is estimated to be 50 meters across and occupies only a small portion of the approximately 200 meter (650 foot) diameter summit crater," the update from the AVO said. "There have been no observations of ash emissions or explosive activity during this current lava eruption. The previous lava dome that formed throughout the fall-winter of 2011 was largely removed by the explosive activity on the 25th and 29th of December, 2011." That eruption spewed an ash cloud about 15,000 feet into the air. The mountain has no real-time monitoring, allowing for updates only when satellite imagery is available.

    Situation Update No. 5
    On 2012-02-15 at 04:13:15 [UTC]

    Event: Volcano Activity
Location: USA State of Alaska Cleveland Volcano

    Situation:
The lava dome covering Mt. Cleveland volcano in Alaska has grown by 25 percent since last week. The dome was reported to be 40 meters across on Monday Feb. 6., and has now increased to 50 meters in size, according to the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO). "We got indications from satellite data that the dome had grown slightly," Alaska Volcano Observatory Research Geologist Matt Haney said. "The recent expansion shows that growth has not ceased." The current lava dome is much smaller than the previous dome. "The previous lava dome that was removed by explosive activity on Dec. 25 and Dec. 29 covered most of the 200-meter-diameter summit crater. So, indeed it was larger than the current dome," said Haney. Given that the current lava dome is still significantly smaller than the dome in December, does that mean the explosion would be smaller if it happened from this smaller lava dome? "No, a larger dome doesn't necessarily mean a larger yield from the explosion," said Haney. "We're still expecting the same type of altitude for the ash cloud. It should interrupt Trans-Pacific flights." The new lava dome is still expanding, but when it is finished, it could stay inactive for years. "This recent expansion shows that the growth has not ceased," said Haney. "Eventually, there will be a final dome. When the dome in the crater finishes growing, it can stay inactive for quite a while, but this dome is definitely still slowly growing." When asked if the dome could still potentially explode, Haney said, "It doesn't rule anything out. There's certainly the possibility (with dome growth) that we could see explosions in the future." If the volcano erupts, the dome could actually collapse beforehand. The lava dome could become too massive and cave in on itself before an explosion happens. "Think of it almost like pressing down too hard on a balloon," said Haney. "The moment before a balloon pops, the outside of it collapses and then the air inside expands outward." The volcano is still at an "orange watch" level, which means the volcano is "exhibiting heightened or escalating unrest with increased potential of eruption," and the timeframe is uncertain, according to the AVO.

This natural-color satellite image, collected on February 10, 2012, shows the site of the eruption, near the fishing village of La Restinga. Bright aquamarine water indicates high concentrations of volcanic material. Immediately above the vent is a patch of brown water that can resemble a turbulent hot tub when the eruption is strongest. The video of the eruption shows the activity in more detail. This image was acquired by the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) aboard the Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite. The eruption is just off the southern coast of El Hierro, the youngest of the Canary Islands. El Hierro is about 460 kilometers (290 miles) west of the coast of Morocco and Western Sahara. According to El Hierro Digital measurements of the sea floor by the Instituto Oceanográfico Español showed that the volcano’s summit is now only 120 meters (390 feet) beneath the ocean surface—10 meters (30 feet) higher than it was in mid January. The height of the erupting cone is about 210 meters (690 feet) from the former ocean bottom, with a total volume over 145 million cubic meters (512 million cubic feet) of new material.

    Situation Update No. 1
    On 2012-02-16 at 04:18:08 [UTC]

    Event: Volcano Eruption
Location: Canary-Islands (Esp.) El Hierro Island Underwater volcano (unnamed)

Situation:The submarine eruption south of El Hierro Island could be in a process of change: While visible activity on the sea surface above the vent, as well as harmonic tremor signal (thought to be more or less proportional to erupting magma flux) have nearly ceased, the number of earthquakes under the island has increased sharply since yesterday. On 15 February, more than 20 quakes were measured. Most of the earthquakes were very small, well below magnitude 2, and were clustered beneath the NW and SW sectors of the island at depths of around 10 km. There is no conclusive interpretation of this measurement. A possible (and usually assumed) scenario is that rising new magma from the mantle reservoir is creating new intrusions and rupturing rock to create pathways in the crust under El Hierro, not using the same paths as until now. That would explain why less magma is currently being erupted at the current vent(s). In that scenario, the eruption will continue, perhaps even from a different vent, and an increase in magma output is going to be expected any time soon. However, this is speculation. The earthquakes could as well be related to some other (known or unknown) process, e.g. gravity-induced adjustments that respond to pressure changes and occur within previously ruptured areas of the crust beneath the island.
The next days or weeks will show what happens next.
