"Yesterday’s rain was totally out of the ordinary, absolutely unusual," Federal District Government Secretary Jose Angel Avila Perez told the Formato 21 radio station Sunday. The most affected areas are Alvaro Obregon, Miguel Hidalgo, Cuauhtemoc, Benito Juarez, Iztacalco and Venustiano Carranza, the Federal District’s government said in a statement. The rains are "the heaviest to occur so far this year," Mexico City’s government said. The torrential downpours caused power outages that lasted for several hours in sections of the metropolis and affected traffic. Important highways and bridges, such as the Piedad bridge and the Miguel Aleman span, were closed due to flooding that completely covered cars in some places. Officials expect the areas most affected by the rains to return to normal over the next few hours, Avila told Formato 21. "The drainage system functioned" in Mexico City, but the rains caused extensive flooding, the Federal District’s government said. The worst flooding happened around the La Compania canal, which runs from Mexico City to near Chalco, where some areas were covered by up to 70 centimeters (more than two feet) of water. "No structural damage was found" on the Rio Piedad and Rio Churubusco spans, just flooding, Mexico City water and sewer department director Ramon Aguirre said. "Health Secretariat teams are using water department pumps to clear basements and cisterns so they can be disinfected," the Federal District’s government said. The weather forecast calls for more showers in the late afternoon and early evening, prompting officials to call on residents to use caution while traveling through flooded streets.

Flood havoc returned to Monash, with cars being trapped and stormwater overwhelming the sewerage system. The SES rescued three drivers near Syndal station who became trapped after trying to drive through floodwaters. The rescues came only two months after the SES plucked six drivers to safety during the February 4 and 5 storms. At Mt Waverley railway station the underpass was filled to the ceiling with water all Wednesday morning. The water did not affect trains, however, with the water staying well below tracks. In Ashwood, residents were told to keep away from Gardiners Creek after sewage was released into the river. Melbourne Water staged a "controlled release" of sewage into the creek after the rain threatened to overwhelm the area's sewerage system. In a statement, Melbourne Water said the sewage was released to prevent problems at a household level. "Releases of diluted sewage are caused by large amounts of water flowing into the sewerage system. [Releases] are necessary to reduce pressure and prevent sewage backing up through household drains." Melbourne Water told people to keep clear of the river for 48 hours, a period that ended on Thursday.
