    Description:

<CODE>A volcanic eruption on the Caribbean island of Montserrat at the weekend has disrupted air travel into and out of Puerto Rico. Ash from the blast caused severe delays and forced several airlines to cancel flights on Saturday (March 10), particularly to the southern city of Ponce. Delta Air Lines' connections from the US to San Juan, the capital, were also affected. Volcanic ash from Montserrat, a British territory some 275 miles from Puerto Rico, often impedes visibility in the Caribbean, but the problem at the weekend was compounded by a large dust cloud blown across the Atlantic from the Sahara Desert, airport officials said. At the last measurement, the ash cloud was believed to be as high as 8,000 feet and heading west. Inhabitants of Montserrat have been preparing for an eruption since late-December, when volcanic activity threatened the north-west of the island. Parts of the small landmass in the Lesser Antilles were evacuated in January. In 1997, the Soufriere Hills volcano erupted for the first time in recorded history, killing 19 people and covering much of the southern part of the island in ash.</CODE>

    Description:

<CODE>Guatemala's National Disaster Reduction Coordination (CONRED) office declared an orange alert on Friday after the Fuego Volcano, some 45 km from Guatemala City, erupted and triggered waves of small earthquakes. According to reports reaching here, the eruption spewed ash 500 meters into the air, and triggered 20 to 30 small earthquakes a minute. The warning affects more than 31,000 people living in 14 nearby towns in the provinces of Escuintla, Sacatepequez and Chimaltenango. Disaster reduction personnel are monitoring radios and coordinating with local government officials, and they said the citizens were at no risk for the moment. However, local mayors have prepared plans to evacuate citizens to emergency hostels if the situation worsens. According to vulcanologists, eruption records of Fuego Volcano, one of the country's most active volcanoes, date back to 1542, and at its fiercest it could spray ash all the way to El Salvador or Honduras. CONRED recommended the country's civil aviation authorities take precautions in the area. </CODE>

    Description:

<CODE>Mount Batutara located on Lembata Island, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), erupted as of March 17, 2007, and is declared off-limit to local fishermen used to transit on the island, a local official said. The eruption of Mt Batutara was still going on and it would be dangerous for fishermen trying to approach the island for a transit, Head of the National Geology Agency's Volcanic and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) Dr Surono saidThursday. Mt. Batutara, which is 750 meters above the sea level, is currently on the alert status or the second level, he said. "Lembata Island has no inhabitants, but it is often used as a transit area by local fishermen," he said. After receiving information from local fishermen about the eruption of the volcano on March 17, 2007, volcano observation officers tried to approach the island to check the condition of the mountain, which spewed volcanic materials up to 1,500 meters high. "However, up to now, our staffs could not approach the island at a close distance because of huge waves," he said. </CODE></CODE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

    Description:

<CODE>A volcano on the northern Kuril island of Paramushir, off Russia's Pacific Coast, is again showing signs of activity, local meteorological services said Thursday. Tatyana Kotenko, of the hydro-meteorological station Severokurilsk, said steam and gas clouds could be seen rising some 150 meters (450 feet) above the Ebeko volcano's crater in the morning. "The volcano is spewing out steam and gases 100 to 300 meters (300 to 900 feet) [into the air], with the temperature upwards 100 degrees Celsius (212 degrees Fahrenheit)," Kotenko said. "With a western wind blowing, or when there is no wind, Severokurilsk residents can smell the sulfur and chlorine." The 1,138-meter (3,300-foot) Ebeko volcano has three summit craters, each 350 meters (1,000 feet) in diameter. Its historical activity, recorded since the late 18th century, has so far been restricted to small-to-moderate explosive eruptions from the craters. </CODE>

    Event: Volcano Eruption
Location: Russia Kamchatka Peninsula Volcano Klyuchevskaya Sopka

    Situation

<CODE>Eurasia's highest volcano, Klyuchevskoi, on the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia's Far East, is spewing lava to a height of 100-150 meters (up to 490 feet), local scientists reported Friday. Alexei Ozerov, a leading researcher at the Russian Academy of Sciences Volcanology and Seismology Institute's Far Eastern department, said the volcano's activity has sharply increased since it last erupted February 15. "The size of the lava globs reaches several meters in diameter," the researcher said. "We should expect lava flows to appear on the slope of the volcano anytime now." Ozerov said such eruptions have not taken place for more than 15 years, but added that tourists and sportsmen should avoid the slopes of the volcano. Prior to its February eruption, Klyuchevskoi last came to life in January-May 2005. Following that eruption, the volcano "sank" by 50 meters (about 165 feet), from 4,800 meters (about 16,000 feet) to the current 4,750 meters (15,845 feet). Eruptions do not immediately threaten the Peninsula's settlements, but volcanic ash, consisting of magma particles with a diameter of up to 2 millimeters (.078 inches), can poison land and water. Ash emissions and trails can also present a danger to aircraft.

    Description:

<CODE>The head of Peru’s ‘Disaster Prevention and Training center’ (PREDES), Gilberto Romero, requested on Friday that regional government authorities of the southern region of Moquegua reactivate evacuation plans of the population living near the Ubinas volcano in lieu of a possible new eruption. Local townspeople reported they felt an explosion early Friday at approximately 5 a.m. causing concerns over another imminent eruption of the 18,609 feet high (5672 m) stratovolcano. It was almost exactly a year ago that Ubinas started belching out ash, smoke and toxic gases again after it had been inactive for almost 40 years. Thousands of people living in nearby rural were evacuated, livestock was killed and sources of water were polluted. Today’s seismic activity may have been jinxed by a two-week old announcement by an expert of Peru’s Institute for Geology, Mining and Metallurgy (Ingemmet) who informed that Ubinas was showing “a considerable activity reduction” during the last six months. “It is necessary to reactivate evacuation plans of last year if the things get worse, so that the population that lives close to the volcano can leave the place without problems”, Romero told the Andina news agency. He recalled that year’s plan allowed that inhabitants organized themselves and knew how and where they had to move before the emergency became acute. He also recommended that regional and local authorities maintain a permanent dialogue with the population to stay informed of what they need, for example protection face masks and food since the meat of their livestock will become uneatable.</CODE>

    [IMG][IMG]FOURPEAKED- (58o46' 12"N 153o40' 12"W), 2,105 m, ALASKA
As of the 3rd of April, the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) has reported that intermittent, low-level seismic activity continues at Fourpeaked. Clear satellite images yesterday and web camera images this morning show little if any steam emission.
The age of the last significant eruption at Fourpeaked is not known. Because geological investigations have been limited and ice covers much of the area, the sizes and styles of past eruptions are not well-constrained. However, the composition of the volcano indicates that eruptions can be explosive, possibly producing plumes that reach in excess of 33,000 ft above sea level and local ash fall.

The colour code at Fourpeaked is currently at YELLOW .
    ERUPTION Pro 10.6
is currently forecasting volcano Fourpeaked to erupt in 2007 with >18.51% probability.

    [IMG][IMG]ATKA IS. (Korovin)- (52o22' 52"N 174o19' 15"W), 1,533 m, ALEUTIAN IS.
As of the 3rd of April, the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) has reported that intermittent, low-level seismic activity continues at Korovin. Clouds obscure views of the volcano by satellite today. AVO has received no new information about activity at Korovin today. Korovin has erupted several times in the past 200 years, most recently in 1998. Eruptions typically produce minor amounts of ash and occasional, small lava flows. Ash plume heights could exceed 20,000 ft above sea level. Korovin occasionally produces large steam plumes from its summit.
The largest volcanic centre in the central Aleutians, Atka consists of a central shield and Pleistocene caldera ringed by 7 or 8 satellitic volcanoes. The most prominent of these are the post-caldera cones of Korovin, Konia, Kliuchev, and Sarichef, some of which have been active in historical time. Korovin, the most frequently active volcano of the Atka volcanic centre, contains a 1533-m-high double summit with two craters located along a NW-SE line. The NW summit has a small crater, but the 1-km-wide crater of the SE cone has an unusual, open cylindrical vent of widely variable depth that sometimes contains a crater lake or a high magma column (Marsh; in Wood and Kienle, 1990). A fresh-looking cinder cone lies on the flank of partially dissected Konia volcano. Sarichef has a symmetrical profile, and Korovin and Kliuchef are relatively uneroded and the source of most if not all historical eruptions. Hot springs and fumaroles are located on the flanks of Mount Kliuchef and in a glacial valley SW of Kliuchef.

As of the 3rd of April, the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) has reported that intermittent, low-level seismic activity continues at Veniaminof. Clouds obscure web camera views of the intracaldera cone today. Short-lived, very small-volume steam and ash bursts from the intracaldera cone have been common over the past few years. Ash from these events is not likely to extend beyond the caldera rim. There are no indications that a larger eruption is imminent.
Mt. Veniaminof volcano is an andesitic stratovolcano with an ice-filled 10-km diameter summit caldera located on the Alaska Peninsula, 775 km (480 mi) southwest of Anchorage and 35 km (22 mi) north of Perryville. Veniaminof is one of the largest (~ 300 km3) and most active volcanic centers in the Aleutian Arc and has erupted at least 13 times in the past 200 years. Recent significant eruptions of the volcano occurred in 1993-95 and 2005. Both were moderate Strombolian eruptions producing intermittent low-level jets of incandescent lava fragments, and low-level emissions of steam and ash from the main intracaldera cone. During the 1993-95 activity, a small lava flow was extruded into the summit caldera ice field producing an ice pit. Minor ash-producing explosions occurred in 2002, 2004, early 2005, and in recent weeks. Previous historical eruptions have produced ash plumes that reached 6,000 m (20,000 ft) above sea level and ash fallout that blanketed areas within about 40 km (25 mi) of the volcano.

The colour code at Veniaminof is currently at YELLOW .

As of the 3rd of April, the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) has reported that clouds obscure views of the volcano by satellite today. AVO has received no new information about activity at Cleveland. The lack of a real-time seismic network at Cleveland means that AVO is unable to track local earthquake activity related to volcanic unrest. Short-lived explosions with ash plumes that could exceed 20,000 ft above sea level can occur without warning and may go undetected on satellite imagery.
Beautifully symmetrical Mt. Cleveland stratovolcano is situated at the western end of the uninhabited, dumbbell-shaped Chuginadak Island. It lies SE across Carlisle Pass strait from Carlisle volcano and NE across Chuginadak Pass strait from Herbert volcano. Cleveland is joined to the rest of Chuginadak Island by a low isthmus. The 1730-m-high Mt. Cleveland is the highest of the Islands of the Four Mountains group and is one of the most active of the Aleutian Islands. The native name for Mt. Cleveland, Chuginadak, refers to the Aleut goddess of fire, who was thought to reside on the volcano. Numerous large lava flows descend the steep-sided flanks of the volcano. It is possible that some 18th to 19th century eruptions attributed to Carlisle should be ascribed to Cleveland (Miller et al., 1998). In 1944 Cleveland produced the only known fatality from an Aleutian eruption. Recent eruptions from Mt. Cleveland have been characterized by short-lived explosive ash emissions, at times accompanied by lava fountaining and lava flows down the flanks.

As of the 3rd of April, the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory (YVO), reported that during the month of March 2007, 63 earthquakes were located in the Yellowstone Region. The largest of these shocks was a magnitude 2.3 on March 21, 2007 at 8:05 AM MDT, located about 27 miles south southeast of West Thumb, Wyoming. A swarm of 11 small earthquakes occurred on March 1st located about 10 miles east southesat of Madison Junc., WY with the largest of magnitude 1.6 Earthquake activity in the Yellowstone region is at relatively low background levels.
Ground Deformation Summary: Through March 2007, continuous GPS data show that most of the Yellowstone caldera continued moving upward at similar to slightly lower rates as the past year. The maximum measured ground uplift over the past 32 months is ~15 cm at the White Lake GPS station. An example can be found at: http://www.mines.utah.edu/~ggcmpsem/UUSATRG/GPS/Site_Info/pboscat_lkwy.gif. The general uplift of the Yellowstone caldera is scientifically interesting and will continue to be monitored closely by YVO staff.

As of the 29th of March, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) has reported that Mauna Loa is not erupting. There have been no significant changes. GPS data suggest that, starting in early September 2005, inflation of the volcano has slowed. Over the past 6 months, our GPS network has recorded nearly 1 cm of extension across the caldera and 2 cm of extension across the flanks. Beginning around December 1, 2006, extension slowed further but resumed pre-December rates by mid month. Slow inflation continues. Tiltmeters have recorded no significant changes. Mauna Loa remains seismically quiet with few earthquakes occurring beneath the summit and the Ka`oiki seismic zone on the east flank. Since the beginning of January, 2005, HVO analysts have rarely located more than 10 earthquakes per week beneath Mauna Loa summit. Temperatures and gas concentrations on the summit crater floor remain at background levels. The webcam has shown nothing unusual; typical warm spots on the crater floor produce steam in the early morning and late afternoon. The next update will be posted on or about April 9, 2007.

The colour code at Mauna Loa is currently at
    YELLOW.

    Description:

<CODE>Raging lava has spewed out of one of the world's most active volcanos on the French island of La Reunion. The red hot lava cut roads in half, damaged homes and created huge clouds of steam as it flowed into the Indian Ocean. But the islanders are used to the spectacle. It is the third eruption of the Piton de la Fournaise or 'Mountain of the Furnace' this year alone. About 50 teenagers were taken to hospital from three schools in Saint Joseph with respiratory problems caused by the volcano's sulpher fumes. Researchers on the island are concerned the recent activity may be creating more cracks lower down the volcano, which will allow the molten lava to spread further. The volcano is about 530,000 years old and has erupted an estimated 170 times since the mid 17th century. La Reunion is a small island wedged between Madagascar and Mauritius. It is one of twenty-six regions of France and President Jacques Chirac is the head of state. The 777,000 island inhabitants once prospered from the cultivation of sugar cane, but tourism and financial aid from Paris now underpin its economy.</CODE>
