    ภูเขาไฟ Bulusan ที่ Bicol ฟิลิปปินส์ปะทุ

    Event: Volcano Eruption
Location: Philippines Province of Sorsogon Volcano Mount Bulusan

    Number of Evacuated: 2000 person(s)

Situation: The explosion of restive Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon province in Bicol on Monday affected at least 108,699 people in areas around the volcano, the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council said. In its 6 p.m. update, the NDRRMC said the explosion affected 17 villages in Irosin town, five in Juban town, and 19 villages in Bulan town. Classes in all levels were suspended in Irosin town and in Masbate City, even as no village in Bulusan was affected since the ash drifted southwest. On the other hand, ash affected Daang Maharlika and Gate-Bulan Airport Road but these road sections remained passable, the NDRRMC said. Bulusan exploded for 19 minutes starting at 9:12 a.m. Monday, spewing ash three kilometers into the air. Among the affected areas and population were: - Irosin: 17 barangays (San Pedro, Bagsangan, Tinampo, Cogon, Bolos, Gulang–Gulang, Monbon, Gabao, Bulawan, Tongdol, Gumapla, Batang, San Isidro, Casini, Salvacion, Buenavista and Macawayan) were affected. Estimated affected population is 32,309 people. Of these, 75 families or 319 people were evacuated to Gallanosa National High School. - Juban: 5 barangays (Guruyan, Sipaya, Maala, Calmayon and Puting Sapa) were affected. Children and pregnant women from Brgy Puting Sapa who evacuated Monday morning returned home in the afternoon. - Bulan: 59 barangays with 76,390 people were affected. Sorsogon provincial disaster management teams provided nebulizers, cough syrup and vitamins to affected towns. The Philippine National Police (PNP) in Irosin and Sorsogon proceeded to the affected barangays for possible search-and-rescue operations. All units and stations in Sorsogon are continuously monitoring the situation ready to respond to any eventualities, the NDRRMC said. Philippine Army trucks are assisting in the evacuation of villagers affected by ash falls. The Army's 9th Infantry Division used M35 trucks during the evacuation of affected residents in Juban. The 49th Infantry Battalion evacuated families from Puting Sapa village in Juban to Gallanosa National High School. For its part, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) deployed roadside workers and maintenance crew to clear affected roads and man a motorist assistance center. It also provided signages in affected road sections. The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) coordinated with local residents in conducting ash clearing/flushing at the Maharlika Highway and roads.

    Event: Volcano Eruption
Location: Philippines Province of Sorsogon Volcano Mount Bulusan
    Number of Evacuated: 2000 person(s)

Situation: Volcanic quakes kept Mount Bulusan in central Philippines busy Tuesday, a day after it spewed huge columns of ash, experts said. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has recorded at least 16 quakes since Bulusan came alive Monday with a 19-minute, 1.8-mile-high ash explosion that affected nearby town and villages. &quot;Bulusan Volcano's seismic network recorded 16 volcanic earthquakes during the past 24 hours. Two of these events, which occurred at 9:12 a.m. and 10:27 a.m. (Monday), were recorded as explosion-type earthquakes,&quot; the institute said in its latest update Tuesday, GMA News reported. The ash explosion accompanied by a rumbling sound was heard in towns 6 miles away in Sorsogon province. Traces of ash deposits also have been found in the province's Magallanes town and in Masbate City in Masbate province. Institute officials said Bulusan's status remained at Alert Level 1, indicating its activity source is shallow and hydrothermal in nature. Entry into a 2.5-mile-radius area of the danger zone was prohibited because of the threat of steam and ash explosion, the report said. They also warned prevailing winds could carry the ash to the northwest and southwest sides of the volcano, and residents there were asked to take precautions. Some 2,000 villagers living at the base of the volcano were evacuated Monday. The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines has declared the vicinity around Mount Bulusan a &quot;no-fly zone&quot; because engines could be damaged it they take in volcanic ash. Experts told the Philippine Daily Inquirer scientists have collected ash samples to determine if there is any indication of magmatic eruption soon.

Indonesia's Infamous Mud Volcano Could Outlive All of Us

    by Dennis Normile on <abbr class="published" title="24 February 2011">24 February 2011, 2:03 PM

</abbr> Since it roared to life in May 2006, a mud volcano near Indonesia's
coastal city of Sidoarjo has swallowed homes, rice paddies, factories,
and roads, killing 15 people, displacing 40,000, and harming the livelihoods
    of many more.

As the ongoing eruption nears its 5th anniversary, observers wonder
whether it will ever stop. The answer: Not anytime soon. A new study
predicts the volcano will continue spewing significant amounts of mud for
another 2 decades. A second study forecasts that it could grind on as long
    as 87 years.

The mud volcano has inflicted a punishing blow to the region of Java island
700 kilometers east of the capital, Jakarta. Nicknamed Lusi, a contraction
of lumpur (Indonesian for mud) and Sidoarjo, the volcano has so far
disgorged 144 million cubic meters of mud, some of which now covers an
area roughly twice the size of New York City's Central Park. Much of the
mud has been diverted to a nearby river, where it has formed a new 83
hectare island and extended a natural delta. Compensation and mitigation
have cost at least $767 million, according to Humanitas, a
nongovernmental organization in Melbourne, Australia, that is studying the
disaster's social impact. That is a fraction of the real economic toll, which is
    still being tallied.

Lusi may be a harbinger of disasters to come. "Like a volcanic eruption, a
mud eruption is just the effect of geological activity, and I'm sure in the
future another mud volcano must erupt in this region," says Soffian Hadi
Djojopranoto, a geologist with the Sidoarjo Mudflow Mitigation Agency. "We
need very serious research to understand this phenomenon."

Despite being the most intensely studied mud volcano ever, scientists have
failed to agree on the cause of the eruption, which began in the early-
morning hours of 29 May 2006. Mud suddenly started gushing out of vents
200 meters from a rig drilling an exploratory gas well. Drilling logs indicate
problems with the well several hours before the eruption, and many
scientists believe there was an underground blowout. Others, however,
suggest that a magnitude-6.3 earthquake that occurred 2 days earlier and
280 kilometers away activated a local fault. Despite the uncertainty, the

Indonesian government pressured the Bakrie family, majority owners of the
drilling company and one of the country's wealthiest families, to foot most
of the bill for compensation and mitigation.

Debate now centers on how Lusi's plumbing works. "The most important
piece of work now is to estimate the longevity," says Richard Davies, a
geologist at Durham University in the United Kingdom. That will determine
if mud-handling countermeasures are sufficient. Dueling hypotheses have
    led to different forecasts.

Davies argues that the eruption is driven by pressurized water from a deep
aquifer in permeable material beneath an impermeable rock layer. He
argues that the wellbore pierced the impermeable rock, allowing water to
gush up and sweep overlying mud to the surface. Modeling this scenario
using combinations of known quantities, such as total ejected mud volume
after 1 year and 3 years and assumed parameters, including aquifer size,

Davies and colleagues arrived at an estimated longevity of 26 years,
published online on 24 February in the Journal of the Geological Society.
They also predict that the ground around Lusi will subside up to 475 meters
from its original elevation, with mud filling the crater.

Others augur that Lusi will be kicking around far longer. Michael Manga, a
geologist at the University of California, Berkeley, contends that pressure
and fluid originate not in the deep aquifer but in a shallower mud layer.

In a paper in review, his team predicts that an ever-widening circle of
subterranean mud will get sucked into the volcanic system and pushed to
the surface. The model "is a new way of thinking about how eruptions
work," Manga says. His team estimates a 50% chance that the eruption will
last 40 years and a 33% chance that it will drag on for 87 years.

The predictions are getting a mixed reception. Peter Flemings, a geologist
at the University of Texas, Austin, has not seen Manga's results, but he
says his "gut feeling" is that tapping into a large permeable aquifer, as
Davies proposes, would produce the volume of material spewing from Lusi.
The "absolutely critical assumption," Flemings says, is the aquifer's
size—and calculating that from limited data, he says, "is fraught with
uncertainty." Davies's subsidence projections, meanwhile, "look big," says
Heri Andreas, a geophysicist at the Institute of Technology Bandung in
Indonesia. GPS surveys of ground deformation show that after an initial
period during which the ground was sinking up to 4 centimeters per day,
subsidence has tapered off to just several centimeters per year.

For more robust projections, says Manga, "we need more and better data."
And more is at stake than scientific models. Long-term social, ecological,
and infrastructure programs can't be planned "until this geological
phenomenon is better understood," says Humanitas Director Jeffrey
    Richards.

Humanitas is organizing a May symposium in Surabaya at which Richards
hopes experts will forge a consensus on what studies are most likely to
reveal Lusi's geological secrets. Davies would like to see a well drilled into
the aquifer some distance from Lusi to measure pressures. Other options
are 3D seismic surveys of the subsurface.

Numerous efforts to plug the volcano have failed. Fortunately, the mud flow
is now manageable, says Djojopranoto. After peaking at 180,000 cubic
meters per day in early 2007, the rate has tapered to 10,000 cubic meters
per day. A system of 6- to 7-meter-high earthen dikes encloses some 700
hectares of ponds where mud and water is collected and then pumped into
the Porong River, where it is adding to a natural delta downstream. The
impact on the Porong has been minimal, given that it historically carried
heavy sediment loads from magmatic volcanoes upstream, Djojopranoto
    says.

Environmentalists claim that authorities are understating some of Lusi's ill
effects. Studies by nongovernmental organizations in 2007 indicated that
high sedimentation was smothering marine life, particularly bottom-
dwelling creatures like snails, says Pius Ginting of the Indonesian Forum for
Environment. An ongoing concern, he says, is the mud's toxicity, which he
claims is laden with carcinogenic polyaromatic hydrocarbons—a contention
that Djojopranoto says has never been independently verified.

In Lusi's vicinity, the mitigation bureau has rerouted roads and resettled
most families. Mud volcano tourism is providing income, says Djojopranoto,
but "not enough to revive the economy." Even after the eruption ends, Lusi
may erupt periodically or ooze mud for centuries. "On east Java, we have
mud volcanoes that have been active for hundreds of years," Djojopranoto
says. None, however, compare in size, in societal harm, or in the puzzles
that Lusi continues to present to scientists.

ScienceShot: Japanese Volcano Filled to the Brim

    by Dennis Normile on <abbr class="published" title=" 7 February 2011"> 7 February 2011, 3:02 PM</abbr>

All eyes on Japan’s Kyushu Island are on the growing lava dome of the volcanic peak Shinmoedake, which has been erupting off and on since 26 January.

This image captured on 4 February shows the lava nearly filling the 700-meter-wide crater. Scientists are predicting that eruptions could grow stronger and go on for months. The peak's last major eruption continued for a year and a half in 1716 and 1717. The University of Tokyo's Earthquake Research Institute is posting regular updates of its observations, including photos taken from the air (first in Japanese and a few days later in English).

Kagoshima Prefecture posts pictures from a neighboring peak that are updated every minute. Ash from the volcano, although minor compared with what spewed from Iceland's Eyjafjallajökull last year, has disrupted flights and buried fields of winter vegetables. More than 1000 residents evacuated the rural area during the first eruptions, but most have returned. There have been no deaths or serious injuries so far.

    Number of Evacuated: 2000 person(s)

    Situation:

Restive Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon continued to show activity as state volcanologists recorded at least nine rockfall events there in the last 24 hours. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) also noted at 5:45 a.m. Tuesday a confined muddy stream at the Monbon Creek in San Benon in Irosin town. "Bulusan Volcano’s seismic network recorded three volcanic earthquakes and nine rockfall events during the past 24 hours ... Bulusan Volcano’s status remains at Alert Level 1. This means that the source of activity is hydrothermal and shallow. Entry to the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) is strictly prohibited, since the area is at risk to sudden steam and ash explosions," it said in its Tuesday update. Phivolcs also warned residents in the northwest and southwest sectors of the volcano to take precautions against ashfalls. "If possible aircraft should avoid flying on the western side of the volcano as volcanic debris are likely to be carried in this direction by the prevailing winds," it added.

The lava coming out a of new fissure or volcanic vent that measures more than five times the length of a football field with lava shooting up to 65 feet in the air. Scientists at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory already knew something was up when an alarm sounded in the afternoon, alerting them that Pu'u 'O'o Crater was deflating. Soon after that, the crater floor began to collapse. "As a volcanologist this is what we do. These are the moments we wait for," said Janet Babb of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. "It is exciting to see an eruption begin particularly if you can see it from the very very start... this is in an area between Pu'u 'O'o and Napau Crater. It's on the middle part of Kilauea's east rift zone. It's located within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and there are no structures nearby." This new fissure eruption is considered to be a new episode in the ongoing eruption of Kilauea which began in 1983. Geologists are hiking into the area to take measurements and collect samples. Because of this new fissure eruption, the park has closed the chain of craters road and all east rift zone and coastal trails until further notice.

    เจ้าบลูโม่ ชวาตะวันออก อินโด ก็พ่นเถ้าถ่านกระจาย

    Event: Volcano Eruption
Location: Indonesia East Java Mount Bromo

    Situation:
Spitting fire and brimstone over a spiritual site below, this is the Mount Bromo volcano unleashing its full fury. The Indonesian crater has been spewing out flames and lava for two months now in its biggest eruption. Ngadirejo, the nearest village, is covered in ash. The area has been declared a disaster zone. Snapper Jorge Santos took these shots. He said: “The air is thick with ash.”

    Event: Volcano Eruption
Location: USA State of Hawaii Puu Oo Crater

    Situation:
Roads, hiking trails and camping grounds near the volcano on the big island of Hawaii have been closed since Sunday. Plumes of lava have shot 25m (80ft) into the air and scientists say potentially lethal amounts of sulphur dioxide gas could be present within half a mile of its vents. More than 150 small earthquakes have been recorded in the area over the last 48 hours. ‘As a volcanologist these are the moments we wait for,’ said Janet Babb, of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) also said a fair crater glow can be seen by the naked eye Tuesday night. "The seismic network around Mayon Volcano recorded four volcanic earthquakes during the past 24 hours. Steaming activity from the crater was moderate with white steam clouds drifting towards northwest. Fair crater glow (Intensity II- can be seen by naked eye) was observed last night," it said. Phivolcs said Alert Level 1 remains in effect over Mayon Volcano, reminding the public not to enter the six-kilometer permanent danger zone (PDZ). It cited the continuing threat from sudden small explosions and rockfalls from the upper and middle slopes of the volcano. "Active stream/river channels and those perennially identified as lahar prone areas in the southern sector should also be avoided especially during bad weather conditions or when there is heavy and prolonged rainfall," Phivolcs added.

In recent months the east rift zone of Kilauea Volcano had been releasing 300 to 400 tons of sulfur dioxide gas every day. After the new eruption of the mile-and-a-half long fissure this past Saturday, the amount of SO2 gas has increased to 10,000 tons per day. “It's hard to say how long that might go on,” said United States Geological Survey spokesperson Janet Babb, whose part of a team that helps monitor Kilauea. “The elevated SO2 emission that we're seeing corresponds to that high lava effusion rate.” Currently the new eruption is spewing 2.5 million cubic meters of lava per day in an unpopulated area, five times the recent average of a half million cubic meters per day. For now the increase in lava and volcanic gas is not having a major impact on residents. Currently the air quality in all Big Island communities remains moderate to good.

However that’s mostly the result of sulfur dioxide and sulfate aerosol, the other main ingredient in vog, being blown out to sea. If Hawaii’s typical northeast trade wind pattern were to wane or move to a more southerly direction, the recent increase in volcanic gas could be felt by many. During such conditions vog travels quickly to the other major islands along the Hawaiian chain. “With these higher emission rates there might be a noticeable difference,” said Babb, “particularly for people who are sensitive to the volcanic fumes.” So far the increase in sulfur dioxide has not shown up in air quality sampling. State Department of Health monitoring shows the level of sulfur dioxide in some areas is up to .3 parts per million, which is still far short of the 1 part per million considered hazardous. “There’s not an expected community-wide health effect at those levels,” said Hawaii County Civil Defense administrator Quince Mento, “but people that are sensitive may be affected.” USGS geologists were in the process of gathering new SO2 samples on Tuesday after an initial round of testing on March 6 showed the increased levels of volcanic gas. Babb said the latest results should be available soon.
