JOHOR BARU: The floods have claimed six lives in Johor – four in Segamat and two in Kluang. Police discovered three bodies floating in Segamat, one of the worst hit areas.
The dead were identified as Ahmad Sarkawi, 70, Marsiah Ahmad, 69, and Nor Azahari Nordin, 28.
It is believed that all three drowned.
Also in Segamat, 61-year-old Teh Sook Ching died after hanging on for 24 hours for help to get her to the hospital.

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>Teh had fainted in her home on Wednesday morning and her family members had called various authorities for immediate aid but efforts to reach their home were hampered by shoulder-deep waters.
In Kluang, two bodies were found in a car submerged along the Paloh road.
They were identified as M. Mageswari, 26, a teacher, and A. Muniandy, 59, believed to be her uncle.
Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Hazmi Ali said a lorry driver had reported seeing two people in a car being swept away at 7am on Wednesday, but was unable to save them.
“We could not launch a rescue operation earlier as the current was too swift,” he said.
The car was discovered at 2.30pm yesterday submerged in 3m of water, some 80m away from where they were last seen.
So far, across Malaysia, 60,000 people have been evacuated from their homes, including 50,000 in Johor.
Four train services – Ekspres Senandung Malam KL-Singapore; Ekspres Senandung Malam Singapore-KL; Ekspres Timuran Tumpat-Singapore; and Ekspres Timuran Singapore-Tumpat – will resume normal service today. The Ekspres Wau KL-Tumpat and Tumpat-KL was back on the tracks yesterday.
The other train services to the affected areas remain disrupted.
The Meteorological Department has issued a Red Stage warning and warned people to brace for emergencies. Heavy rain is expected to hit the east coast states in the peninsula as well as the Klang Valley.
Red Stage denotes heavy monsoon rain, and the warning has gone out to Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Negri Sembilan, Malacca, as well as southern Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.
The department cautions that intermittent rain in these states is expected to turn heavy and last till Sunday. The warning was issued at 9am yesterday. The other warning stages are “orange” and “yellow”.
Orange means moderate to heavy monsoon rain with wind speed of 50-60kph and floods in low-lying areas. Yellow is just the possibility of a “monsoonal surge” in the next 24 to 48 hours. The North-South Expressway is now open to the public, with the Tangkak area free of floods.
A PLUS operator said the Tangkak area of the highway, which was initially closed because of floods, was declared clear as of 2pm on Thursday.
In Malacca, more people were taken to flood relief centres as the situation worsened – at 2pm yesterday, a total of 6,860 people or 1,565 families were affected.
In Kelantan, the latest state to be hit by flooding, some 400 people had to be evacuated when a tributary of the Sungai Kelantan broke its banks near Gua Musang early yesterday.
Areas affected by flooding are Kampung Kerinting, Kampung Baru, Kampung Baru Hilir, Kampung Limau Kasturi and Kampung Ciku Lama in the Tualang area where floodwaters rose to knee level.
A district fire and rescue department spokesman said the Gua Musang-Jeli, Gua Musang-Kuala Lipis and Gua Musang-Kuala Krai roads remained open despite heavy rain.
State Drainage and Irrigation Department director Lim Chow Hock said the water level at Sungai Golok had breached the warning level of 7m. Water level readings at Sungai Kelantan taken at Tualang and Tangga Krai in Kuala Krai were also reported to have exceeded the warning level of 29m. In Pahang, water was still rising in Rompin and Kuantan districts. As at press time, 2,000 people had been evacuated.
Some 6,000 residents in nine Felda schemes in the area lost their only link to the Segamat-Kuantan road when part of the bridge over the river was washed away on Wednesday.
In Terengganu, 260 people from four villages in the Kemaman district had to be evacuated from their houses. The situation in Negri Sembilan has improved, with 467 people at evacuation centres in Gemas and Tampin yesterday, compared with 760 people the previous day.

Floods: Medical teams on standby in case of second wave

PENANG: The Health Ministry has placed its medical teams from other states on standby in view of a possible second wave of floods in Johor, Pahang, Malacca and Negri Sembilan.
Health Ministry parliamentary secretary Datuk Lee Kah Choon said the medical teams comprising medical doctors and nurses were ready and would be despatched to help victims if floods hit again.
He said the ministry had ample medical supplies and medical personnel would be ferried to the flood hit areas by the police and armed forces.
Lee was commenting on concerns raised over the Meteorological Department’s forecast Wednesday of bad weather for Johor and south-eastern Pahang until Sunday, and continuous heavy rain for Malacca and Negri Sembilan for four more days which may result in further flooding.
Lee said the ministry had mobilised more than 1,000 medical personnel divided into 200 teams to help the 65,000 flood victims in Johor, Pahang, Malacca and Negri Sembilan.
He said the ministry's medical personnel were monitoring the food preparations and cleanliness level at the evacuation centres daily to ensure the people received clean food and water supply.
"They will also distribute fliers to remind flood victims to clear stagnant water in their surroundings to prevent dengue outbreak,” he said. Lee said about 50 cases of flu, cough and itchiness were reported at the flood-hit areas, so far.

JOHOR BARU: The number of flood victims in Johor has more than doubled overnight to 50,172 in 208 relief centres with Johor Baru recording the highest with 19,415 victims. Eight major roads remain closed.







JOHOR BARU: Continuous heavy rain has brought floods back to the southern part of Johor.

Areas around the state capital were among the worst hit, with more than 20,000 people evacuated.
On Thursday afternoon, there were less than 800 people left at relief centres. By yesterday evening, 129 centres were re-opened to accommodate people forced to abandon their homes once again.

‘Third wave’ warning for Johor' By FLORENCE A. SAMY


PETALING JAYA: A red stage heavy rain warning has been issued for Johor, especially the eastern and southern parts of the state, which has raised fears of a third wave of floods.
As at yesterday, parts of Batu Pahat were still flooded, with the water remaining stagnant in some villages. The situation elsewhere in the state has returned to normal.
The warning issued on the Meteorological Services Department website stated that moderate to heavy rain was expected until this Sunday.
“The northeast monsoon will be more active and winds are getting stronger in the South China Sea at about 40-50kph, and will result in heavier rainfall in Johor and east Pahang,” the statement said yesterday.
According to a meteorological officer, the rain was not expected to be as heavy as that of last month or in mid-January. But a red stage warning was issued because stronger winds were bringing more clouds to Johor and because some river levels in Johor had not yetreturned to normal.
State Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) director Chong Chee Han said river levels
in Batu Pahat and the levels at two dams had had breached their danger mark.
“The water level at the Sembrong dam is now at 12.02m (danger level: 12m) while the Bekok dam is at 18.42m (danger level: 17.5m),” he added.
A check on the DID website (http://infobanjir.water.gov.my) showed that river levels for most parts of Johor were above normal, with the water in some rivers having passed the alert to danger marks.
Chong did not discount the possibility of another round of floods and said the Government’s machinery was ready if it occurs.
“We never had 500mm of rain before but it has now happened. We never had heavy flooding twice within a month, but that too has occurred. All we can hope for is that a third wave does not happen or spill over to the middle part of the state.”
A red stage warning was also issued for Sarawak where moderately heavy rain, mainly in the late afternoon and night, is expected to continue until Sunday.
The Meteorological Department issued an orange state warning for Pahang, where occasionally moderate rain is expected to last until this Sunday.

Choppy waters with waves up to 4m are expected to continue until early next week for the east coast of the peninsula.
DID director-general Datuk Keizrul Abdullah said, however, it would be “extremely unusual” to have a third wave of floods over such a short period but did not discount the possibility.

นายนาจิบ ราซัค รองนายกรัฐมนตรีมาเลเซีย กล่าวว่า ตัวเลขดังกล่าวยังไม่รวมถึงการประเมินความเสียหายที่เกิดขึ้นกับบุคคลและเศรษฐกิจ ซึ่งหมายถึงว่าตัวเลขความเสียหายทั้งหมดอาจมีจำนวนสูงมากกว่าที่ปรากฏ ตัวเลขความเสียหายที่ประเมินดังกล่าวเป็นการประเมินตัวเลขของฝ่ายรัฐบาลในการฟื้นฟูและความเสียหายที่เกิดกับสาธารณูปโภคและอื่น ๆ
ประชาชนระบุว่า เหตุการณ์น้ำท่วมเมื่อไม่นานมานี้นับเป็นครั้งร้ายแรงที่สุดในรอบศตวรรษ โดยรอบแรกเกิดขึ้นเมื่อปลายเดือนธันวาคมที่ผ่านมา และรอบที่ 2 เมื่อต้นเดือนมกราคมที่ผ่านมา มีผู้เสียชีวิตรวม 18 คน ส่วนใหญ่อยู่ในรัฐยะโฮร์ นอกจากนี้ ยังมีผู้คนกว่า 200,000 ต้องอพยพออกจากบ้านเรือน. –สำนักข่าวไทย
