There is an art to starting well. A good way to begin a meditation session is with ritual. Bowing with reverence and gratitude to the Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha, followed by chanting a few verses of dedication and recollection, helps us to feel that we have entered a special space, one in which we’ve temporarily distanced ourselves from worldly concerns. At the beginning of the session it is good to remind ourselves of our purpose in practising meditation - namely, to learn how to abandon the unwholesome, cultivate the wholesome and to liberate the mind from suffering and its causes. This reflection uplifts and energises the mind. But sometimes this is not enough. To make a good beginning we should assess our state of mind. Is there still some coarseness agitation, depression? If the mind lacks interest and zeal for meditation, that defect must be addressed before turning to a subtle object like the breath. If so, we might spend a few minutes preparing the mind with one of the following practices. Scanning the sensations in the body systematically from head to toes. Practising loving-kindness meditation to remove anger and resentment. Practising meditation on the 32 parts of the body to remove sensual obsessions. Practising meditation on death to remove laziness and complacency.
