Situation: People in the High Arctic say their 24-hour darkness isn't as dark as it used to be, and a weather researcher says it's because of the warming climate. "We still have a daylight and there's still blue, green, red down there — there's sun sign still," said Zipporah Ootooq Aronsen, who lives in Resolute Bay, Nunavut. "It's not usually like that." People in Resolute Bay now sometimes see a distant island that in the past was only visible during daylight hours. "It never happened like that before," Aronsen said. "Now we can see it once in a while, when it's a clear day." Wayne Davidson, a weather researcher in Resolute Bay, said warmer thermal layers over cold dense polar air cause light to bend and travel farther. "If there's a huge contrast between colder and warmer air, there's longer travel of light from any locations," he said. Inuit have been noticing changes during the dark season for years but the changes are becoming more visible as the climate warms, Davidson said. "It should be usually, around average, –31 degrees," he said. "It was, couple of days ago, –5 or something like that, so it's pretty wild." That refraction of light at the border between cold and warm air is what's allowing people to see farther than normal, Davidson said. "Refraction makes light travel," he said. Jaypetee Akeeagok, who lives in Grise Fiord, Nunavut, said the weather has also been unusually warm there. "You can actually drive Skidoo around town without gloves on," he said. And people in Grise Fiord have also noticed there's more light in winter. "Twenty years ago, we wouldn't even be able to see the whole village, in high noon, which is only nine kilometres, but now we get to see some daylight," Akeeagok said.

Situation: The shifting of the planet's northern magnetic pole forced Tampa International Airport to readjust their runways on Thursday, according to a report by Jeremy A.

Kaplan reports that the shifting of the Earth's magnetic fields, spurred by the drifting of the north pole towards Russia, has prompted officials at the Florida airport to shut down their primary runway until January 13. The temporary closure will give them time to change their taxiway signs to account for the magnetic changes, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) officials told Fox News. "The poles are generated by movements within the Earth's inner and outer cores, though the exact process isn't exactly understood. They're also constantly in flux, moving a few degrees every year, but the changes are almost never of such a magnitude that runways require adjusting," Kaplan reported, citing FAA spokesman Paul Takemoto as a source.



The runway's listing on aviation charts will be changed from 18R/36L (representing 180-degree approach from the north and the 360-degree approach from the south) to 19R/1L, according to various media sources. When Kaplan asked Takemoto how often these kinds of adjustments were needed at airports, the FAA spokesman told him, "It happens so infrequently that they wouldn't venture a guess… In fact, you're the first journalist to ever ask me about it." He was also quick to point out that passenger safety will not be an issue, but that the changes were needed "to make sure the precision is there that we need." According to a Wednesday article in the Tampa Tribune, late this month, the airport's east parallel runway and a seldom used east-west runway will also be closed so that officials can change signage to reflect their new designations as well.



"The Federal Aviation Administration required the runway designation change to account for what a National Geographic News report described as a gradual shift of the Earth's magnetic pole at nearly 40 miles a year toward Russia because of magnetic changes in the core of the planet," the Florida newspaper's website also said.

Situation: The busiest runway at Tampa International Airport reopened at 4 a.m. today, nearly two weeks after it was closed to re-designate runway and taxiway signage to account for a drift of the magnetic north pole toward Russia.



The numeric re-designation created no problems for flyers, airport officials said, and the airport's two other runways will be closed for 20 days for similar work. But the news went viral on the Internet, setting off a groundswell of interest from life science researchers and news media from as far as Hong Kong, South Korea, Spain and Germany following a tbo.com and Tampa Tribune report on Jan. 6.



Interest was piqued although it's widely known in scientific circles that the magnetic North Pole drifts at nearly 40 miles a year because of magnetic changes in the planet's core. "We verified what was happening to callers and explained the basics of how runways are numbered to the points on the compass," airport spokeswoman Brenda Geoghagan said. "Maybe it was just that other airports that have made these changes did not explain what was happening and we did when we closed the runway," Geoghagan said. The Federal Aviation Administration monitors the ongoing shift in the magnetic North Pole and requires airports to update its runway designations on aviation charts, spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said in Atlanta.



When the magnetic North Pole shifts, runway designations must be changed to stay in alignment with the aircraft's navigational compass. The FAA did not immediately know how many airports had made changes recently. St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport is due to change runway designations in October, Bergen said.
