Description:

Event happened on 17.06.2008 at 05:51:46 UTC: Two people were killed and another injured when a 4.5-magnitude aftershock struck a province in central China adjacent to the scene of last month's devastating earthquake, China's state press said. The aftershock struck yesterday in Ningqiang county, Shaanxi province, which borders Sichuan, the province at the epicentre of the 8.0 magnitude earthquake on May 12. More than 12,600 aftershocks have rattled the region since the May 12 earthquake, with at least 25 of those measuring greater than 5.0 on the Richter scale, and five measuring between 6.0 and 6.9, the China Earthquake Administration said. According to government figures, the Sichuan quake has left more than 69,000 people dead and nearly 17,500 missing, while up to five million people are homeless.

แผ่นดินไหว 5.6 ริกเตอร์ครั้งแรกนั้นเกิดขึ้นเมื่อเวลา 8.52 น.ตามเวลาท้องถิ่น ห่างจากเมืองกูนัง สีโตลี ไปทางตะวันตกเฉียงเหนือ 42 กิโลเมตร ในจังหวัดสุมาตรา ที่ระดับความลึก 12 กิโลเมตร กรมธรณีวิทยาของอินโดนีเซียรายงาน

ส่วน แผ่นดินไหวครั้งที่ 2 นั้นเกิดขึ้นในเวลา 9.53 น. ห่างจากเมืองเดียวกันนั้น ไปทางตะวันตกเฉียงใต้ 65 กิโลเมตร ที่ความลึก 17 กิโลเมตร

อย่างไรก็ดี เจ้าหน้าที่ของกรมธรณีวิทยาเผยว่า ยังไม่มีรายงานความเสียหาย หรือการเตือนภัยสึนามิ ทว่าแรงสั่นสะเทือนของแผ่นดินไหวทั้งสองครั้งรู้สึกได้ไปถึงเมืองสีโบลกา ซึ่งอยู่บริเวณใกล้เคียงกับเมืองกูนัง สีโตลี

ขณะที่ กรมสำรวจทางธรณีของสหรัฐฯ วัดแรงสั่นสะเทือนของแผ่นดินไหวในเมืองอิเหนาดังกล่าวได้ถึง 6.0 ริกเตอร์ ที่ระดับความลึก 35 กิโลเมตรทีเดียว

ทั้งนี้ อินโดนีเซียเป็นประเทศที่ตั้งอยู่บนวงแหวนไฟแปซิฟิก ซึ่งแผ่นเปลือกโลกมักเคลื่อนที่มาชนกัน เป็นเหตุให้เกิดแผ่นดินไหว และภูเขาไฟระเบิด ซึ่งในเดือนธันวาคม ปี 2004 ถูกถล่มด้วยคลื่นยักษ์จากแผ่นดินไหวครั้งรุนแรง จนทำให้มีผู้เสียชีวิตมากถึง 168,000 คนในจังหวัดอาเจห์เพียงแห่งเดียว
